A good thing to have is a bottle of Iodine ticture available from out door shops, if you wish to drink questionable water cold, put a few drops of iodine into it and leave it upto 30 minutes or according to instructions. You can drink iodine laced water, but it is not fab, it has a sort of antiseptic taste to it and a brownish pink colour. The only other reasons not to drink iodine laced water is if you are pregnant or suffer an iodine or thyroid problem. The iodine disinfects the water, killing everything that might be there. If after the recommended period of disinfection you still don't like the taste of iodine,add ascorbic acid to it, basically vitamin C, that has the effect to neutralise the iodine effect, cure the taste and kill the colour. Water is generally safe then, or you could invest in one of these;

This thing alters the DNA of bugs in water so they cannot reproduce in humans causing illness. Also they are far cheaper in the US than they are for us in the UK.

You can use much coarser filters than standard while you are getting the system flushed, you'll save some money that way. But be careful with the stronger chlorine, it will burn right through flesh and it's extremely corrosive on metal. Wear eye protection, goggles when handling it, that's very important.

I would recommend against the dribble, and would probably take the filters out and take off the screens of the faucets (use a channel locks and a rag to avoid damaging the chrome and undlerying brass, lefty loosie righty tightie as you are looking into the business end of the spigot), at the time you run it thru the house, and if you have a frost hydrant in reach of the well, run water from a hose into the top of the well 15 minutes or so full blast,  chlorine is an 'anxious gas'  and will disappate quite readily in the air, (thats why in a chlorine (or anhydrous) accident they have to get everybody out for a long long ways.

If you have septic, and arent sure you are going to sell real fast or dont want to piss off the new owners right away, I would take a hose and run it down the drive or whatever as you flush.  You can kill a septic.
