When we finally tell the families (we are waiting until we have more solid plans for that) I suppose we will be recruiting my mom, and possibly his sisters. Friends are easy, those close enough to be invited wont be insulted by being told we dont need stuff. Most already know about the house idea and agree with it.
Relatives are a bigger deal. My family is far from close, and I have some very rich relatives who like to show off their funds by buying big, showy and (often) unreturnable items. I dont want my wedding to become their chance to one-up one another. I am sure we are going to wind up with a few useless items, I'll see if mom can minimize the wasteful gifting on her end. I am not cold, I just think a monogrammed crystal punch bowl is a little unnecessary for 2 people staring out a life together.
