Status: offline 		A piece in today's NYT argues that conservatives are beginning to look enthusiastically at John McCain, after long viewing him as a "nemesis."

[McCain] used a recent appearance with the Rev. Rick Warren at Saddleback Church in California to embrace opposition to abortion more explicitly than President Bush ever did. Asked when a fetus gains human rights, Mr. McCain responded, “At the moment of conception.”

And he has abandoned previous calls to moderate the Republican platform’s support for a ban on abortion without exception. Instead, he allowed conservative organizers like Phyllis Schlafly to shape what many advocates say is the most conservative platform in the party’s history. At Ms. Schlafly’s behest, for example, the party approved an immigration plank calling for new laws to speed widespread deportations and other punitive measures at odds with Mr. McCain’s stance on one of his signature issues.

“I am now more confident about a John McCain presidency than I am about a George Bush presidency,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. “The campaign has courted conservatives aggressively, and it has turned around remarkably in just the last few weeks.”

What does this rightward movement mean for McCain's maverick image? Will it turn off undecided voters in the middle? What do you think?

I wonder if McCain really means it.

What does Obama say about illegal immigration, anything clear? Or does he only speak about it when he's got a mouth full of mush.

Don't worry, in any case McCain will be another in a lengthening line of big govt., deficit spending, nation building liberals...otherwise advertised as conservative republicans since 1980.

Personally...I am more than ready for that ultra-moderate, right wing, revolutionary pacifist.

Interesting question. Has McCain changed his views on immigration, or did he not have much choice about accepting Schlafly's platform plank?

Status: offline 		John McCain doesn't seem conservative to me.  He picks a woman Vice President.  
He doesn't allow the President of the US to speak in person at the RNC.
Most of the time conservatives do not change anything.  That is why we get stuck in a rut when they are in.
That woman VP.  George Bush is defenantely conservative.  He has been doing the same thing for eight years.

They may be more vocal in their support but it will make little difference in the election...in my opinion.

Of course you would say that....you are an Obama supporter. No surprise.

But I can tell you for a fact that the enthusiasm on the conservative side is now bigger than it ever was during 2000 or 2004. It is going to lead to another big turnout for the Republicans if nothing else.

The excitement level in the GOP has blown up. Volunteers are increasing. Campaign offices are finding more women getting involved in the campaign. They have taken in $10 million dollars just since the Palin announcement.

To say this hasnt done anything would be ignorant of the obvious.

McCain said he heard us regarding immigration, and he changed his stance - which was about the same time his fortunes changed in the primaries.

Still no word yet on where Obama stands on immigration?

I would venture to say the majority of Republicans do not support the ultra conservative views...I'll even bet significant part if not a small majority support women’s rights in abortion.

No I think the bugaboo about gay marriage, abortion, and WMD will not carry all Republicans this time.

Status: offline 		The Conservative Right bigger than 2000 or 2004? tell Me what you base that on?....I think that is questionable...Georgie Boy was the Poster Child of the conservative right and unbelievably popular with them in 2000 and still lost the popular vote.  President McCain?....a tad bit early for that c l. I see no great ground swell for McCain yet and not so sure I will.
