Jerry Reed, a  singer who became a good ol' boy actor in car chase movies like "Smokey and the Bandit," has died of complications from emphysema at 71.

His longtime booking agent, Carrie Moore-Reed, no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday.

"He's one of the greatest entertainers in the world. That's the way I feel about him," Moore-Reed said.

Son!

I'm the Snowman will be bringing bootleg Coors when he busts through the Pearly Gates

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run.

Keep your foot hard on the pedal. Son, never mind them brakes.
Let it all hang out 'cause we got a run to make.
The boys are thirsty in Atlanta and there's beer in Texarcana.
And we'll bring it back no matter what it takes.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run.

Ol' Smokey's got them ears on and he's hot on your trail.
He aint gonna rest 'til you're in jail.
So you got to dodge 'im and you got to duck 'im,
you got to keep that diesel truckin'.
Just put that hammer down and give it hell.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',
we're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm east bound, just watch ol' Bandit run.

When you're hot, you're hot
And when you're not, you're not....

What many people don't know is that he co-wrote the broadway musical "Big River", based on Huck Finn.  It has some wonderful music.

The scene in Smokey and the bandit where he drove his rig over all of those bikes after the bar fight was a classic. I just watched it last night...

Strangely enough a local radio station of mine just today began a contest whereby they will be giving away one of the Firebirds officially commisioned for the movie, Smokie & The Bandit. This is the car that Burt Reynolds drove as the blocker for Snowman as they evaded and eluded Buford T. Justice.

Also two of my favorites are...Amos Moses...and....She Got the Goldmine (I got the Shaft)

From one of the youTube comments on Reed:

quote:

I met him once. He toured the USS MEMPHIS, a submarine, when I was on the crew. He looked you in the eye and spoke plainly and kindly.

Talented musician, and not a bad actor, I liked his Snowman character.

I always loved Jerry Reed's music.  Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned are Ko Ko Joe, Guitar Man and one alot of people probably have never heard called "A Good Woman's Love."  I couldn't find a clip of Jerry singing it on YouTube but I found this one with him and Glen Campbell doing a couple tunes, including Ko Ko Joe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvSsJAdEK7E

He was truly a down-to-earth, good-hearted guy.  He'll truly be missed.........................luci

Reed was one phenomenal guitar player. That gets overlooked at times. RIP.

Aw, man.... I loved this guys music! Hell, I used to watch him all the time on "Pop Goes the Country" and his appearances on other country shows....

(Never cared much for "Smokey and the Bandit" it was a red neck moron movie financed by Coors... honestly, a car chase based around product placement? Ick! It's almost as bad as "Mac and Me" and McDonalds.)

But Jerry Reed was a great muician. His shows had great energy, and were almost a combo of "speed bluegrass" and standup comedy. Got to see him once, playing a venue along I-25 in Denver/Nothglenn... the "Faded Rose"? (It's been almost two decades) But when that man got on a banjo, there was no stopping him! Think I'll pull out a couple of his albums tonight...

I'm glad I'm not the only one to remember this.  I don't really dig country music, but, Jerry was pretty darn cool.  And yeah, I loved Smoky and the Bandit. ;)

May Jerry still be a picking and a strumming in the after life.

And a few comments...

Born in Atlanta, Reed learned to play guitar at age 8 when his mother bought him a $2 guitar and showed him how to play a G-chord.

A $2 guitar!  Oh my goodness...how many years ago was that?

At 17, he signed his first recording contract, with Capitol Records.

That is a very impressive accomplishment.

Reed continued performing on the road into the late 1990s, doing about 80 shows a year.

And he had a great work ethic, a very admirable trait.

It wasn't financed by Coors.  It was a movie directed by a ex-stuntman.  Coors was picked because of the bootleg status west of Texas.  I don't why you think everything about the South is moronic.  I guess you hate Jazz, rock 'n roll, and the blues too.  It was just a fun little movie.  It was a favorite of Alfred Hitchcock.  Everything doesn't have to be Shakespeare, unless you'e pretentious and phony.

RIP Jerry Reed.

Cledus Snow: Hey Bandit. Me an' Fred got a question.
Bandit: What you an' Fred want?
Cledus Snow: How come we's doin' this?
Bandit: Why d'you ask?
Cledus Snow: Well they said it ain't never been done before.
Bandit: W'hell thats the reason, son.
Cledus Snow: [shrugs] That's good with Fred.
Bandit: [laughing] Ten-four  BTW... you knew you were at a party in the 70's when you saw Coors east of the Mississippi!
