cyberdude611 -> Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 9:13:35 AM)

Now I think this is a non-issue. I really dont care. But I tend to remember back in 2004, the Democrats made a big stink over Bush and Cheney dodging the draft. In fact, remember Dan Rather? He lost his job over it.

Turns out Joe Biden used 5 deferments and claimed to have asthma as a child in order to avoid the Vietnam draft. This was the same number of deferments used by Dick Cheney.

Sanity -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 9:16:16 AM)

Yeah, I remember that. As if it were yesterday... it used to be, if a person running for office had had a deferment they were considered to be lower than pond scum (by the Left).

And with Deferment Joe threatening Russia and Iran and Pakistan the way he is... I could see how this could conceivably become an issue.

bipolarber -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 9:16:46 AM)

Yeah, must've been lucky for him, to have a medical condition...

The other guys had to pull strings with political connections to avoid being stuck in a rice paddy.

But Bush did the best of course... he just walked away before his hitch was up.

So did Bill Clinton

NumberSix -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 9:19:12 AM)

LOL, cybe.

And before that Republicans made an issue out of Kerry's War Record.
Before that, Clintons draft dodging refusal.
Before that Dukakis' non-war record.

Thats politic, we all will make an issue out of the size of your dump, its frequency, its aroma, if it can tuck it to somebody, politically.

Properly speaking, cyberdude11---

He stood up loud and proud and said "hell no, I won't go". Very much different kettle of fish than slinking around, in my view.

Amen to this.  And if you're bringing up something that you think is a non-issue, then you're just carrying water.

Tantriqu -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 9:49:10 AM)

I'd have to say this even if it were a Republican being grilled, but the most common non-combat reason for being invalided out of the Armed Forces [especially since the US has been in tropical countries for the most part since WWII] is allergies, so docs have known to kick sneezers and wheezers out at screening since before Vietnam.
So Biden really does have a valid medical reason.

nothing wrong in using your medical condition to avoid going to the army...i was drafted at 18 by the french army... ive never been to france even once in my life...but because dad was born there that means i am a citizen automatically.  at that time i was still recovering from heart surgery.

popeye1250 -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 10:10:30 AM)

Informative article.
He played football and swam as a lifeguard?
Hmmmm, the asthma didn't seem to bother him then.
I wonder just (when) the asthma became apparent to him?
Is he still being treated for it?
That would mean a lot of medical records over the decades.
What bothers me more is that he's a lawyer.
Yup, just what we need in Washington, (another) lawyer!

Revisionist history, being what it is, has put a new light on all this.

We now view the Viet Nam era vet with honor. That was not always the case. Right or wrong a whole bunch of people did anything they could to avoid serving in that war.

In fact all you had to do was be enrolled in College and you got a deferment.

It is now trendy to have served or wish you had. This was not always the case.

And, I might add, hair plugs to stay out of Bald and Beautiful magazine.

Good points on how the public perception of serving in the Vietnam War has changed over all these years, Jeffff.

A bit over 1 million people served in the Nam. Today, about 8 million claim to have been there. Seems like it's mostly Republicans who are getting caught lying about this. Funny, that.

There`s a few misguideds who think asthma is no big deal.

I`d love to give them a simulated demonstration of the partial to near suffocation some can experience during an attack.

Coincidentally, these are the same folks I`d like to give a demonstration of water boarding to,and the simulated suffocation one experiences.

The OP`s hero,Rush Limbaugh, got a med exemption for a pimple on his butt.

What was "destroyer of nation`s" Dick Cheney`s excuse for not serving?

If Biden were a war monger and hypocrite, then this might be important to normal people.

Thadius -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 1:24:36 PM)

I am going to put this about as simply as I can.

I have no problems with Biden not serving during that time for whatever reasons.  It was a different time, and I accept the fact that some folks had moral objections to what was going on.  The man has dedicated much of his life to public service in other ways, and thus this talk about the draft is a non issue.

One who humbly wore a uniform in service,
Thadius

Musicmystery -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 1:42:33 PM)

Once again, folks----

It's horrible when you oppose the candidate, and it's understandable when you support the candidate.

Can we stop pretending it's otherwise?

Thadius -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 1:45:13 PM)

Tim,

I am going to assume that was a fast response.  As I am clearly not supporting Biden as a candidate, yet believe this is just more of the same garbage.

Curious,
Thadius

Yes, it was a FR. Sorry.

BitaTruble -> RE: Biden used deferments and asthma to stay out of Vietnam (9/1/2008 2:32:34 PM)

US Military & Asthma

"Asthma
Previously, any history of asthma was disqualifying, regardless of age. While medical waivers were sometimes possible, waiver approval usually required scheduling and passing a pulmonary function test. Under the new policy, Asthma is only disqualifying if it occurs after the applicant’s 13th birthday."
