AFAIK, there was no stigma attached to a pol changing his or her mind until Bush painted Kerry as a flip flopper. IMO it was a masterful stroke by Bush, who managed to make his own inflexibility and stubbornness into a political virtue. How about you? Do you look down on a pol that changes positions (with cause of course), or consider it a plus?

But, they had better have a good explanation and be able to back it up with facts. If a politician changes positions according to whichever way the political wind is blowing at the time or what the polls say, or depending on which crowd they are addressing at the time then it is a negative.

Well, when a vietnam veteran such as McCain repeatedly refers to vietnamese as 'gooks' and 'slopeheads' no longer does it, is that a flipflop or that in the fullness of time and in retrospect of passion he has come to a time in his life when the circumstance has changed? I would be very wary of someone who cannot modify a position, or say 'I was wrong'. These are motile times. Improvise; adapt; overcome. The american way. Ron

Thatcher once said "U turn if you want to, the lady's not for turning". Masterful use of political rhetoric, but like most of La Thatch's philosophy highly divisive. Some see the ability to modify one's position to take account of events as a virtue.....some see it as a weakness. Thing is, those who see it as a weakness are either in the majority or are more motivated to take part in the political process.

Anyone changing their position on something (political or otherwise) based on increased knowledge, change of significant circumstances, growth - doesn't bother me in the slightest. Change for Expediency - ESPECIALLY in politicians - tends to enrage me. If you're going to have a position - stick to it. If you're going to change that position, have a damn sight better reason than because everyone else thinks a different way than you. If "everyone else' can't offer yoiu evidence and knowledge to back up a change in stance, sticking it out against popularity is the better thing to do.
