NumberSix -> GOPs flip flop. (8/31/2008 10:43:24 AM)

Why would the neo-cons vote for Mr McCain, a man who has admitted contemplating suicide?  Was he treated for it?

Wasn't that a question raised vociferously by the GOP itself that ultimately led to the defeat of Muskie-Eagleton?

What is the GOPs policy on the mentally disturbed in office?
We have assurance by events that they have a don't ask/don't tell policy regarding alzheimers.

And I am sure that the crack pubs out here are dying for a chance to discuss policy.

Ron

I believe McCain has admitted seeking help.

Something I actually admire, when someone does that.

Didn`t think about it this way, though.

How about an Alzheimer's`s test, just to end the speculation about his age?

It's on the agenda for this week, Ron.  Do be sure to tune in.  Check your local listings.

I will be watching his speech, and several others this week.

I wonder if he will discuss that, or duck it?

His good buddy, Strom Thurmond

Thadius -> RE: GOPs flip flop. (8/31/2008 11:13:17 AM)

He has discussed the suicide issue, and how he dealt with it.

As for the losing his mind, I would suggest anybody running for that office has already done so. [;)]

So cynical.  Sure, you have to wonder about his side of the fence, where holding the office is considered the top of the heap... "king of monkey mountain." At last, once in the oval, he and his can start lining their pockets, and sucking up the favors.

Then there are others whom to attaining the office means a call to service, and a chance to effect change for the better.

Those are the two ends of the scale. Where you put your candidate, and where the world at large would put them on the spectrum, is entirely a matter of opinion. I know which end I'd put the current administration though.

I dunno, Ron.  I used up all the magic dust in my crystal ball.  McC could focus the convention on appealing to the conservative wing, still trying to lock them in, or he can take a leap of faith that they will come around, and shine the light on what he thinks we need to do differently.

We hear a lot from the Dems lately about him voting with Bush 90% of the time.  I think he needs to play hard to the 10% issues, and if shedding the McSame label means throwing the current administration under the bus on something, I say 'go for it.'

         I'll be watching.

Everyone is so concerned about McCain's health.

Obama is the one who smokes.  What are the odds Obama develops lung cancer.

Or was that why Obama felt the need to reassure the Democrats that it would be ok if he died in office, because he had Biden?

Hey, if we're going to veer into the twilight zone, why not bring both sides along for the ride?

Let's see what the acturial tables have to say. An average 78 year old white male has a 9.6 year life expectancy. I'll ignore McCain's torture as it is unquantifiable for the charts I'm using. Although it is my understanding that he was in stress positions long enough to permanently damage both shoulder joints. That is almost certain to have strained his heart as well which would tend to decrease his life expectancy. The two skin cancer removals also affect his life expectancy but I can't find enough info on 5 year survival to factor that component in.

An average 47 year old black male has a 28.3 year life expectancy. Without detailed information on Obama's smoking habits its is impossible to quantify a reduction in life expectancy. Although I will note that he would need to be a 2+ pack per day smoker since his preteen years to have a life expectancy as low as 9.6 years.

So it is close to 50/50 that McCain will not survive for 8 years while it is on the close order of 90% chance that Obama will not die from natural causes in that same period.

I think you have that stat wrong.  But hell I will run with it.  Seeing as McCain just turned 72 that would make his expectancy 15.6 years, no?

McCain is 72, not 78.  Which puts his life expectancy closer to 12 years, depending on which tables you use.  Additionally, his mother is 94 and is reportedly vigorous, healthy, and active.  This pushes his life expectancy higher, not lower.

The President serves for four years at a time, not eight.  Whether President McCain will be in sufficient health and vigor to run for a second term of office is a question that will need to be asked in four years.

My bad on his age. No, his life expectancy isn't 15.6.  Based on the table it is 12.4 years. So he has a roughly 60 chance of living through the next 8 years, assuming standard distribution.

I will note for CL that his father died of natural causes at the age of 70. Father's age at death is usually more diagnostic for men than mothers age at death. To do a full calculation of his life expectancy would require information about him not publicly available but his life history shows many reasons to expect his life expectancy to be below the average. That strained heart is a particularly troubling unknown. Although it should be pointed out that he was apparently on a very low calorie diet for some period during his captivity. A very low calorie diet is assocaited with longer life expectancies so without a lot more data than we have it still looks like 12+ years is a good ballpark.

Pretty low really, most cancers risks go up after age 55, that is why if you ever get a cancer policy the premium skyrockets in that age bracket, for smoker or non-smoker.
