By Alan Gomez, USA TODAYDENVER — Former president Jimmy Carter called Republican presidential candidate John McCain a "distinguished naval officer," but he said the Arizona senator has been "milking every possible drop of advantage" from his time served as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
Carter said that whether he was asked about religion, domestic or foreign affairs, every answer came back to McCain's 5½ years as a POW.

Well put, Mr. Carter. Has anyone else noticed McCain doing that? Any time I hear a clip of McCain speaking on NPR, he's always talking about his POW status. Now I'm not taking anything at all away from McCain, but Carter just called it as he saw it. McCain brings up Vietnam almost as much as Walter does in "The Big Lebowsi." Finally, channeling the spirit of the Dude, Carter stands up and says, "What the fuck does any of this have to do with fucking Vietnam?!"

That would be like Obama answering each and every question put to him by reminding the folks that he's black.

"What do you think about abortion?"

"Well, my years spent as a black man..."

"What is your stance on Iran?"

"My time as a black man has taught me..."

"How do you propose to fix the economy?"

"Because I'm a black man, I..."

Again, I'm not taking anything away from John McCain, I'm just glad that someone finally stood up and pointed this out.

Carter is either lying or mis-informed.

I find it interesting that the same party that had no trouble ridiculing someone you actually served. Now finds value in that same service.
I suppose the difference is that if you weren't taken prisoner, you are no different than a national guardsman who served at his own convenience

And if this lie, manipulation and volte-face wasn't so sickening and obvious, I'd find it hilarious.

Come to think of it... it IS very amusing, because really, who's being fooled by this sad effort of theirs :-) ?

So you acknowledge that Carter is lying?

Carter is possibly the worst President in recent memory and needs to shut his trap.

Why was he not allowed to talk at the DNC?  Because he was an embarassment and an abject failure.

The clips on NPR are the same clips, being played over and over, and over again.

*Yawn chuckle* , or whatever it is you do. No, I find it hilarious that the very party who demolished John Kerry for being in Vietnam is now incensing McCain for being in Vietnam. If you really didn't understand the first time around, apologies for not being clearer. If you were being disingenuous again, I'm sorry I even took the time to clarify something that was pretty damned obvious.

Il faut sourire quand on ne sait pas :-) .

I suspect that as a life altering experience Senator McCains time in a p-o-w camp ranks right up there. It would be really odd if he didn't talk about his time in the camp. I would also suspect that xpres Carter is suffering from dementia.  And if not dementia, then at least a severe lack of judgement - which as i recall, he exibited a lot when he was president.

I don't know if Carter was lying, but they had a panel of three vets on CNN the other day, ALL of whom have gone on record as saying they wished he'd STFU about his time as a POW. They too, were taken prisoner during that conflict and to quote, "John McCains harping on it just cheapens the experience by trying to use it to his political advantage, and does a disservice to those of us who went through the same damned thing he did."

Rudi Gullianni = noun/verb/9-11!
John McCain = noun/verb/I was a POW!

The difference is, Kerry lied about his service in Vietnam and was called on it.

Kerry came home from Vietnam and joined the protesters.  He lied loud and often about what happened over there in the media and at rallies.

McCain served with honour and integrity.

gosh and I thought the difference was....

military service was important when we were talking about Kerry, in fact a good reason to vote for the man....

but now it's McCain, so why do they keep bringing it up, I mean who cares if he served.

Sure, I could do the research for you, my rates aren't cheap though.  It's easy to find for yourself and was well reported in the news 4 years ago.

You mean like this one?
quote:

"I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I remember what it was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians, and have the president of the United States telling the American people that I was not there; the troops were not in Cambodia. I have that memory which is seared -- seared -- in me."

Also told here:
quote:

This is how he described it to the Boston Herald in 1979: "I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese allies.  . . . The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real."

Kerry was not in Cambodia in 1968 (and would have been court-martialed if he were), and it is irrefutable that Richard Milhous Nixon was not President in December of 1968.
