PORT JEFFERSON, N.Y. (AP) — A man who scratched off a lottery ticket and realized it was worth $3 million promptly donated it to his church, his pastor said Wednesday.

Pastor Bertrand Crabbe of the True North Community Church of Port Jefferson said the donor, who asked to remain anonymous, said, "This was why God put the ticket in his hands."

The state Lottery announced Wednesday that the independent Christian church will get at least $102,225 a year through the year 2028. The amount could be higher if withheld taxes are refunded because of the church's nonprofit status.

I hope it's spent well. Obviously the donor thinks it will be.

That is a very idealistic gesture by a very generous individual. How will that donation effect the church's non-profit tax status though?

It's a donation, therefore it shouldn't have any effect on their status.

OK, here we go.  NY State winning lottery numbers and taxes -

http://www.nylottery.org/ny/nyStore/cgi-bin/ProdSubEV_Cat_202538_NavRoot_307.htm

"Legislation was passed that requires the New York Lottery to withhold New York State taxes from taxable prizes over $5,000, regardless of the winner's place of residence. This law became effective October 1, 2000 and can be viewed at www.tax.state.ny.us  By law, the New York Lottery is required to withhold past-due child support and prior public assistance received from any Lottery prize of $600 or more."

The church may or may not receive a refund of withholdings on the claim.  It has no bearing on their status though as a non profit.

Great idea!
If I hit the lottery I'll incorporate myself as a non-profit "Church!"
Fuck the IRS!

Church of the Holy Whip - named to commemorate Jesus' tribulations at the hands of the Romans prior to Golgotha?  Of course, the highest form of Communion within said church would have to be a public flogging while restrained to an Andrew's Cross....

To be totally fucking honest (and I have actually been trying to reduce my use of profanity in posts), the guy needs his head examined.

I am fatally honest with my people, strangers are a different story. If I found a wallet with say fifty or a hundred bucks in it I would return it, with the money. If there is like $500 in it I am skimming a fifty or a hundred, but will return the rest, after all the guy could wind up with nothing. If I found a paper bag with $50,000 in it, that would promptly go in my safe and not be touched for a time. It's a matter of perspective.

I could see that situation, when "people" show up looking for their fifty grand, like if I was seen or something. I would say "OK, you can have it but I want a finder's fee because if I would have given it to the cops you would have nothing".

This guy is not too smart, all that's going to happen is the church is going to get a big neon sign and become a mega-church. I could be wrong though, some might use it to help the homeless and all that, but I am not holding my breath.

Charity begins in the home and extends to friends. When friends are down on their luck I will feed them, let them crash here (for a short time) to get back on their feet, even buy them cigarettes. Screw organised charity.

Sure, if I "belonged" to a church, this windfall would bolster my donations, but to give away the whole thing ? I don't think so. Although there is one thing, if the church can get that money tax free, and actually collect more than I could, we could make a deal. This idea of "give until it hurts" is a bunch of bullshit. Why would you hurt yourself ?

Wow, I like my church and all but I couldn't have done it. I would have given them some, but not all.

For one thing, I don't like to imagine the look on the kids faces (nieces and nephews all over age 19) when I announced I had 3 million, but I gave it away....yea that would have gone well.

That would make for a whole new sort of fund-raising telethon!

Hey now Term, ya know this site is full of hand-solo masochists!
