http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/08/obama-camp-threatens-tv-stations-for.html

quote:

The Obama Camp is threatening television stations for airing an anti-Obama ad that links the Chicago politician  to his associate and friend of 20 years, terrorist Bill Ayers.

Obama not only aired a response ad to the spot linking him to William Ayers, but he sought to block stations the commercial by warning station managers and asking the Justice Department to intervene. The campaign also planned to compel advertisers to pressure stations that continue to air the anti-Obama commercial.

the ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m89m0pC_bpY

It's scary that the reaction to an ad that is 100% truthful is to threaten the stations that play it and urge the Justice Department to investigate.  This is just during the campaign and is only a minute example of how the Obama administration and Justice Department would operate if he gets elected.

gina0055 -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:23:25 PM)

Could it be because the ad may be illegal?????  That would be my thought.  Oh, and I don't have links at the moment but somewhere was a news story about a tie between a prominent Republican and Ayers.

"The spot, released by the America Issues Project (an incorporated 501c(4) committee, according to a report by Politico's Ben Smith), intersperses images of Obama and Ayers, and features a narrator asking, "Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol and is proud of it? Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama?"
"This negative campaign ad is clearly express advocacy, and under a federal law passed in 2003, the Bi-Partisan Campaign Reform Act (known colloquially as McCain-Feingold), it cannot legally be paid for with corporate money, including those of a non-profit," said Laura MacCleery, deputy director of the democracy program at the Brennan Center for Justice. "The ad indisputably concerns an election, takes a position on the character and fitness for office of a candidate, and raises no legislative issue. Even this highly skeptical Supreme Court would turn up its noses at the foul odor emitted by this clear abuse of federal election law."
For its part, a Fox News representative told the Associated Press that the network had rejected the spot.
The zone of jurisprudence occupied by the ad is undoubtedly a complex one -- intersecting "

Thadius -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:25:24 PM)

If the ad violates anything, the place to go is the FEC or FCC not the department of justice.  Obama is grandstanding on this one, just wait another week or so as more people dig through all of the papers released by Annenberg and UofI...

Fun fun fun

Edited to add; one more place to go would be the IRS because of their tax status.

DomKen -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:26:53 PM)

The ad contains at least 1 lie and that is enough to have it not be aired. Obama's political career did not start in ayers living room.

In other words, what the hell are those protesters doing outside of their free speech zone.

That's not what the ad said. By the rules it may not be aired.

Obama's senate campaign was kicked off in Ayers living room, according to everyone I've heard talking about this.

Thadius -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:32:32 PM)

Just 2 problems with your argument, first you are assuming that the ad was funded by corporate money, second a 501c4 can run political ads as long as the political ads are not the majority of where the money is spent.  For the record the 501c4s are considered educational non profits, and at least 51% of their funding must go to education.

Just sayin

DomKen -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:32:55 PM)

I was at Obama's campaign announcement. It was in public in Hyde Park. I don't know where Ayers lives but it certainly isn't the park in front of Harold Washington's old apartment.

Which rules?

DomKen -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:37:26 PM)

MCCain - Feingold. It very clearly forbids false claims. The claim is absolutely provably false therefore it is a violation of the law even if by some accounting trick the supposed educational group isn't breaking the spending rules.

Thadius -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:39:44 PM)

Did his announcement in Hyde park occur before or after he met with Ayers and the fund raiser?

The funny part is that is the only part of the ad that you are claiming is false... says something doesn't it.

Actually I have issues with the rest but that is the only part I know is a lie. I'll leave it to the forensic accountants to prove the tax law violations.

Ken,

You claimed that it was easily provable that it was a lie.  Please provide that proof.

Owner59 -> RE: More Change to Believe In (8/28/2008 6:48:20 PM)

Yeah ,they both were on the same charity board.

Oh wow. Obviously, Obama is a terrorist.

Is that the message?

~~~~~~~~~~
Anyone who claims they were friends, is a straight up lier and eats shit.
Just one more ad from the lunatic fringe,bearing fear and appealing to the darkest sides of folks.
Your basic republican offering.
Are you  guys nearing the bottom of the barrel,yet?Probably not.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This,coming from people who want the Iraq occupation to last forever.......,is all the more disgusting.

Can you cite where in McCain-Feingold it forbids false claims?

Edited to add:

  • 501(c)4s can engage in political campaign activity, so long as this is consistent with the organization’s purpose and is not the organization’s primary activity.

    It's LIAR, not lier, and as far as Hussein is concerned, the barrel has just been tapped, and the RNC is nowhere near the bottom.

    Thank you subrob.You`ve corrected me and now I`m perfect.

    Thank you also for the honesty about the GOP.

    Let`s hope Hussein is able to end the abuse of our troops by the neo-cons/republicans/ass clowns.

    Yes?
