The question is often asked, "Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago?"

http://ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=304643903414901

quote:

According to the latest data from the Internal Revenue Service, average adjusted gross income in 2006 hit $58,029 in 2006 dollars. It was the first time that average income had exceeded the peak year of 2000, the year before incomes began to decline.

We've heard a lot about how Bush has mismanaged the economy, but there's no evidence of this. In fact, incomes began growing in 2003 after falling in 2001 and 2002 and have trended upward every year since.

Meanwhile, there's been only one quarter of negative GDP growth, the fourth quarter of last year, which was preceded by two quarters of 4.8% gains.

It can hardly be argued that Bush is responsible for falling incomes in 2001 and 2002, or that he's been a poor steward of the economy.
He inherited a decline that began on Clinton's watch with negative growth in the third quarter of 2000 and again in the first quarter of 2001.

No no no.....you have the wrong script.

Everyone is broke.  Everyone is unemployed.  Barbarians are at the gates.   New Kids on the Block are reuniting.

Good news isn't scheduled until after the beatification of The One.

(you must not have gotten the memo).

Oh, who will save us.

quote:

BARACK Obama says the government should intervene on gas prices to "give families some relief," and he called last week for releasing 70 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

John McCain proposes an end to the ban on offshore drilling and has pushed for a gas-tax holiday because "we need it, we need it very badly."

But both candidates and the public evidently are unaware of a basic fact: Gasoline is more affordable for American families now than it was in the days of the gas-guzzling muscle cars of the early 1960s. Prices are beginning to come down somewhat, but this was true even when the national average was at its summer peak.

D'oh!!!

<rummages through the vast pile of memo's>

Here it is, right alongside the one that will give credit to the proposed withdrawl to His Heighness (despite the fact that the negotiations have been underway for long before he mentioned it)

I really should read these things more often.

Hmm .... to answer the original question.  Eight years ago I was struggling to pay off tons of bills.  Now, I have a 60 acre property with homes for myself and my parents.  I have two paid off automobiles.  My runs a store in a building that we own with no payments either.  I would have to say that I am in a waaaaayy better position than I was.  Of course, no president or congressman had anything to do with those changes.  WE made the decisions that enabled us to make it happen.   It required swallowing our pride and starting over but it worked.  If it had been left to our "leaders" my family would still be slaves to debt.

Edited to add: And no I don't blame it on the current administration.

Say, isn't Michigan the state that Obama  hopes to use as a model for some of his programs?

Yea, your right there. And as much as I hate to admit it, I let my ex convince me to vote for her. She kept telling my how amazed I would be at the things she would do for our state that had never been done. I have to admit, I believe this was the first time that Michigan ever went broke and I was amazed. I blame the unions a lot too, but that's a rant I am not in the mood for.

Yes, it is his first mentioned strategy for how to jumpstart the job creation.  At least according to his website.

quote:

Invest in the Manufacturing Sector and Create 5 Million New Green Jobs
  • Invest in our Next Generation Innovators and Job Creators: Obama will create an Advanced Manufacturing Fund to identify and invest in the most compelling advanced manufacturing strategies. The Fund will have a peer-review selection and award process based on the Michigan 21st Century Jobs Fund, a state-level initiative that has awarded over $125 million to Michigan businesses with the most innovative proposals to create new products and new jobs in the state.

I did not vote for that man and I don't claim him. As for the residents, they kept Young as mayor for a long time. Long enough to almost destroy their city, I guess after him, Klowny looked pretty good.

Oh won't that be fun.....Right now Detroit is using Brightmore as a model for their programs. I wonder if this will be as effective.

So the state with the worst performance on income growth is going to guide The One to a new era of job creation.

Life imitates Monty Python.

So OCP should be taking over the city any day now.

I think that strategy combined with the pro growth increases in corporate taxes will be a win win.

How could it not?

I was a union member for 33 years and was able to retire after 33 years. I am on the fence concerning them. They have to do a better job of making the company that pays the bills to be more profitable. They just don't seem to get it. My union president is on the DNC board so you know where my dues were going. hint hint..It's not McCain..

The only long term thing that is going to make things better is to force government to pay for itself-rather than just sucking money out of the economy, making it more difficult and expensive to do business HERE.
