Purely my opinions... Libertarian philosophy sounds appealing... on paper. In practice, the Libertarian Party has focused less on making the paper model workable in real life, and more on chasing off even faintly viable candidates such as Ron Paul, in favor of seriously flawed, and basically laughable figures like Badnarik or Barr. I don't have a link, but I seem to remember that Badnarik was not the one that most delegates wanted, but he became their choice after the others deadlocked at convention...showing that the LP is not so much a new model for politics, as it is business as usual with outcasts filling the roles. Before the 2000 elections, I was taking part in several actions for farmworkers in the capitol of a large and populous state, and we ended up sitting through a bunch of Green party meetings to present our points at the end. While the Green members seemed less tin-foil-hat than the LPs, I couldn't help but notice that their platform was unremarkable... 'Ralph Nader is for Education!!' has stuck with me. Ever seen a presidential candidate come out and claim that education should be done away with? No, they are all for education, while making sure that the schools produce hordes of ill educated and easily misled future voters. And nothing in the Green ideology described a means of fixing education, just an assurance that their guy was 'for' it. And Nader himself has impressed me not at all ever since he wrote that tell all book to get revenge for not getting a promotion when he was an auto industry executive. The poorly named Constitution Party is just a front for extreme right wing fundies. At the end of the day, all of the 'independent' 3rd parties are just wanting business as usual..only with them enjoying the corruption of power, from being put in charge of your lives and money.
