The need for HOAs is real, but apparently there need to be some restrictions on the rules they can make.

Dammit, I hate situations like this.  Turtles all the way down.

Wtf is the driveway for then??

I cannot stand places like this, there's two relatively close to me, and I try to avoid them at all costs. The last time I was in the one city, some little f***er in an orange vest told me my truck was not allowed, something about an ugly car law. Seriously? I was tempted to roll over him.

The other neighbooorhood wanted to TAKE OVER the public school, and not allow any children in who did not live in the preferred areas.  Thankfully, the school told them exactly what they could do with that idea.

My ideal neighborhood is one where neighbors can't see each others house, no one wants to bother with that neighborhood watch crap, and I can have like a mile long driveway... money is just money, I don't understand why people get all collar popped about it.

LOL.  I wondered the same thing.

[but] code "violations" are NOT the purpose of at least our crime watch.

Years ago, I got 'reported" for having a junky car across the river. I loved the car even more then.  It was a $100 clunker.

You should see some of these back country dumps..   pretty much a mini junkyard. Various suburbs in Chicago dont allow work trucks...

Why does the man take up 2 spaces?

Rules.  Some are good some are bad, and some are outdated.....

"Little fucker in an orange vest?"
Was this in Sunbury, Pa?

Houston has gotten to the point where there isn't anyplace that one can purchase that -isn't- run by HOAs (I calls 'em as I sees em, and mispronounce this as a variant of 'whores' much of the time). There is virtually no zoning in Houston, so the HOAs determine what can and can't go in a neighborhood. Even in ratty-ass neighborhoods here, the HOAs have these completely unrealistic expectations. The latest go-round is over solar panels. Many homeowners down here want to start taking advantage of the sun we get by putting solar panels on their roofs. This is good for the homeowner (since excess electricity can be sold back to the power company -- and with $500 a month power bills...), good for the environment -- but guess what... it's not good for the HOAs, apparently. Over 95% of the HOA "guiding committees" in Houston consider solar panels an "eyesore" and will not allow them to be placed on homes in their neighborhoods.

For the "honor" of being told what you can grow, what color you can paint your house, how much you can sell for, what kind of car you have to drive to park in the carport, whether or not you can supplement your family's power supply with safe, sustainable methods... you get to pay, on the average, an additional $350 a month -without- maintenance fees, on top of the exhorbitant taxes and outrageous prices being charged for properties around here!

HOAs have outlived their usefulness and need to join the other dinosaurs at the bottom of some tar pit.

Calla......just a quick note....they now make solar SHINGLES!!!  they are small, thin and flexible and are mounted just like shingles.  Of course, then the HOA will probably bitch about the "glare" from them.

I'll never live in anyplace with an HOA......I want to build, and there are plenty of options out there for me.....but if I want to paint my house day glo red, then I should have every right to do so!

pahunkboy -> RE: Welcome to SNOBVILLE (8/21/2008 2:46:15 PM)

Calla, wind towers are on the zoning lists these days here.

HOA is one thing...but when a restrictive covenent is placed onto the deed- it is forever.

Ill tell you what-  towns NEED  'good" zoning.   massive pig farms and other unwanted set ups SEEK out these areas...areas with no zoniing to exploit.

Speaking of this...one might guess being designated historical is good.  NOPE.   RUNNNNNNNNN if they try to do that to your place.

In a cluster of homes or condos where one joins a "home owners association",the rules are already there. If you don`t want to obey the rules, move.

There`s a zillion rules in these places.

You can`t alter your home w/out permission from the HOA.

Can`t change a window or install a skylight.

Can`t use a color not approved by the HOA.

What you may plant can be limited.

You can`t park your boat in the long term parking.

The list is endless for some associations. But it`s what you sign onto when you buy into one of these developments. It can be sucky at times, especially for guests and family visits.

And you give the HOA your fuck`n money, every month.[:'(]

I like the private home w/ plenty of room. But that`s not an option for everyone.

If this guys biggest problem is having three cars with a two car garage,he should count his blessings.

Owner, you sound more and more like a Republican!

pahunkboy -> RE: Welcome to SNOBVILLE (8/21/2008 4:05:37 PM)

When discussing what I can and cant do to my place with the 75 year old Babtist church going lady... I said Well they dont want to make me too mad,  otherwise Ill put up a HUGE purple neon penis scuplture on my lot.

LOL.    shes a good neighbor.

farglebargle -> RE: Welcome to SNOBVILLE (8/21/2008 4:15:54 PM)

HOA's never made any sense to me. At their best, the seem sorta like Commies who don't have the guts to be socialists..

sub4hire -> RE: Welcome to SNOBVILLE (8/21/2008 4:25:09 PM)

We lived in a neighborhood like that when I was growing up.  Dad owned a trucking company and he wasn't upscale enough for the neighbors.  For the most part they were doctors and educators.

We had no homeowners association at that time.  Just bitchy neighbors.  When mom and dad decided to also take in foster children...it got messy.  We had the police at our door more often than not.
The neighbors basically said they were not allowed to have so many kids.  Four of their own and 3 foster.

Nothing you can really do about bitchy neighbors..other than get along as best as you can.  When my brother passed away they eased up a little on my parents.  I guess they had some empathy for them.

I will dig out my eyeball with a fork and eat it before I ever buy a house or property that is under the control of an HOA or Covenants.

Oh, I don't know... the last house I owned, I bought so early in the progress of the development, that by the time the neighbors got around to voting on covenants, I had already violated several of them ( no rock gardens, no extentions to patios, and so on)...and was totally grandfathered out of them.

The majority of the neighbors were mid-level military families, (O-4s and O-5s) with a sprinking of Nacans thrown in, and the first thing they did was take the base housing regs and vote them in almost verbatim... no private ownership of weapons, all guests must check in with security, no major changes to landscaping, and other nonsense.

It got to be great fun to show up at the homeowners meetings with legal cites and letters from various officals, and tell them they they couldn't enforce what they had voted on.... [:D]

You got that right. And to think, we're suppose to be living in a "Go Green" world.
