Vendaval -> RE: NATO and Russia, latest news (8/21/2008 1:53:01 AM)

A sampling of perspectives from the Germany, France and Italy respectively.  I found these on Newstran and the translations are not exact in grammar and syntax, being run by Babelfish and all but here goes -

Der Spiegel (Germany)

"CAUCASUS CONFLICT"

Federal Government wants to prevent isolation of Russia

20.08.2008

"Of Russia occurrence in Georgia encounters international indignation: Also Germany demands the immediate departure of the Russian troops. But the German government wants to prevent isolation of Russia - and hopes for imminent discussions in the NATO Russia advice."

Le Monde (France)

DIPLOMACY •  Alliance plays the unit vis-a-vis in Russia

"The members of NATO thus seem to have found a language to react to the expansionist policy and revisionist of Moscow. The crisis meeting which was held in Brussels did not have an other objective. But it seems to have reached it. After all, NATO was divided before the meeting. Its members were clearly divided on the role which Alliance must hold since the end of the cold war: gendarme of the world, peacemaker or political alliance?

In Brussels, the United States and the Eastern European countries of Europe required strict measurements, while France and Germany misaient on the diplomacy of the dialogue. The result is an acceptable compromise if one takes account of divisions of Alliance. The Russia commission of NATO will meet again only after the withdrawal of the Russian troops, but one will not break therefore the contact with Moscow. NATO thus accompanies the efforts by the United States and the European Union (EU) for a peaceful solution of the conflict. This common policy is necessary to show clearly in Russia which it can continue the expansionist policy only it started under Putin. This one tested the will of the European governments, by in particular stopping the energy supply of the Ukraine and Lithuania to intimidate the governments of these countries and by threatening Poland of economic sanctions. Europe did not have until now expressed step of opposition worthy of this name. "

Il Messaggero (Italy)

(19 August)

"Exchange of prisoners. The Russian and Georgian forces have proceeded to an exchange of prisoners in a gesture of good will, in spite of the persistent tension with regard to the promised Russian withdrawal from the Georgia. According to a journalist of Reuters the exchange (15 between military ones and civil Georgians against five Russian soldiers) has happened 45 km to the west of Tbilisi, in a village where emplacements of Russian soldiers and Georgian policemen are faced. Yesterday Moscow had accused to have blown up an exchange of prisoners agreed for noon.

Sluices to the foreign borders with Tbilisi and Baku. Moscow has closed temporary its frontiers with the Azerbaigian and the Georgia to all the aliens, to meaning of those of the Csi, the community of the independent States that to comprise former Ussr less the Baltic Sea States. Rossiskaia Gazeta reports, official daily paper of the government, explaining that the decision had been taken from the executive 12 past August. The initiative is justified like one of the “measures in order to prevent that members of foreign terrorist organizations cross the Russian border and the contraband of crews”. "

That's a bit like wondering who will win the US election, posting one piece from the washington post and expecting it to give a definitive answer.  And Der Spiegel?  Come on!

It would have been much more interesting to hear what you thought, what are you afraid of?

I was offering some different perspectives and points of view. Do you have another German newspaper to recommend, RL?  One with English translation on its Website?

Sometimes I play the sphinx, that's part of the charm.

But to answer your question, I think it is terrible that the new fall fashions feature the juxtaposition of visual acuity by combining plaids, florals and polka dots with bold colors and ruffles.

(I have had back spasms and splitting headaches for 2 days and running, so no, you are not getting a serious reply right now.)

Not as good as the BBC World Service, lets not mention Voice of America.

Thank you for the link, RL.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian lawmakers approved on Monday a resolution recognizing the independence of two rebel regions of Georgia, a move likely to worsen relations with the West already strained by Moscow's military intervention there.

The upper house of parliament, or Federation Council, voted 130-0 to call on President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent.

"Today it is clear that after Georgia's aggression against South Ossetia (that) Georgian-South-Ossetian and Georgian-Abkhazian relations cannot be returned to their former state," upper house speaker Sergei Mironov said during the debate.

Politesub53 -> RE: NATO and Russia, latest news (8/25/2008 3:15:07 AM)

This was always on the cards since the West recognised Kosova. Isolating Russia further at this point plays right into Putins hands.

Level -> RE: NATO and Russia, latest news (8/25/2008 3:28:40 AM)

Ps, I bet this has the consequence of the West admitting Georgia (what's left of it) and the Ukraine into NATO much quicker than originally planned.

What a mess.

Yep. This is where the west dropped the proverbials. For people to blame Russia for doing the same as the west, just shows they are avoiding looking in the mirror.
