compelling piece-  how then would essential serives be paid for?

this is good- in the it should give taxing bodies a wake up call.  just think how much biger government is today then even 10 years ago. is all that really necessary.  of course every place thinks they have high taxes, and when ABC tax is low then XYZ tax is high... or creatively taxes that you never heard of are assessed.

people complain- and yet maybe 5 citizens were at the last city council meeting..  a whole 5!!!!

Pshhh, New Hampshire's way ahead of y'all.

Although the lack of privately owned bars and liquor stores up here is somewhat... disturbing.

Well then MA could join Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

Hmm...living in FL, which in some places has some of the worst infrastructure,(Miami road work....ugh) and as a state has pretty shitty public schools....i wonder if a abolishing state income taxes entirely is a good idea.

State income tax is only one component of the total tax burden. Take NH with a zero state income tax rate vs MA with a 5% state income tax rate. The total tax burden for NH is 7.6% mostly due to high property taxes. The total tax burden for MA is 9.5%. The 2.1% difference is not to be taken lightly. I moved from MA to NH to reap some of the lower tax benefits. However, just because the state income tax is zero does not mean you pay zero tax.

There are other states without already. I do tend to notice though, higher sales tax, property tax and such make up for it.

It's like they are robbing peter to pay paul.

So they get rid of the state income tax, they still need to come up with the money from somewhere.

Every state needs to start controlling their spending, it does not matter what party is in charge, both are getting a little nuts with giving themselves pay raises, spending money like it will never run out.

They keep throwing millions into schools, well not the schools, firms their friends own to tell them how they should run the schools.  But nothing really changes.

Hell, I moved out of Chicago because taxes are going up, the schools are going down, they are becoming more restritive with personal freedoms and no one seems to know what to do about all the crime.  But they will pay for studies to tell them it's getting worse. Hell just walk around at night and you can learn that for free.

some of the trouble is "unfunded mandates"   they come from the fed- but also end up effect county and city government budgets.   the paperwork alone costs millions.

No state income tax in WA, but our gas tax is the highest in the nation and our sales tax is close to 10% depending where you live.  Also property taxes are outrageous, but that's mainly a county thing, but they are probably high because the counties don't get a share of an income tax.

Most states that do not have income tax (I've lived in three -- Alaska, Texas, and Florida) rearrange the other taxes like sales taxes, property taxes and luxury taxes to cover the difference. Some states (like Texas) participate in a state-run lottery for things like funding schools. The difference, for me, between states that have income tax and those that do not is that the amount of tax one pays is at least nominally able to be regulated by the individual, and are based on personal choice. (One thing that I would add is that basic needs should not be taxed in terms of sales tax... at least food and medical care should not be subject to a 'sales' tax or 'service' tax). We opted not to purchase a house because of the exorbitant property taxes in the city. It is a choice. (I won't get into the debate of whether there should even -be- free education).

it does seem that more and more houses with too high of property taxes are... un-sellable.   a place up for sale a block over- the price is right-until I seen the tax on it.

Not to mention that (1) the housing market has crashed and (2) people bought houses they couldn't afford.

I'm the only original owner left in my neighborhood. Some of these houses have been for sale several times. A few will be for sale forever, as they have been for months, because the owners believe someone will come along and pay far more than it's worth.

And yes, property taxes are not only too high---but I believe should be eliminated. They belong to a different era, when land use, not job opportunity, dictated financial stability.

Depends on the state... in New Mexico, there is a sales tax on food and a 'government service fee' on medical care (or at least there was when we lived there 5 years ago). New York (Upstate -- Oswego County) also charges sales tax on food.

Some one has to pay for the chease cake.

and more of us [corporations] need to learn - to only take one peice of cheese cake per person!

Il had sales tax on food at 6% in 1988.

PA has no tax on food or clothing.  But we do have a privilegde to work tax and a occupational assessment tax.. [dont ask- it is an old German idea] one reason I lived at a postal box for some years....
