Laser Gunship Fires

By David Hambling EmailAugust 13, 2008 | 1:02:00 PM

Boeing announced today the first ever test firing of a real-life ray gun that could become US special forces' way to carry out covert strikes with "plausible deniability."

In tests earlier this month at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, Boeing's Advanced Tactical Laser -- a modified C-130H aircraft -- "fired its high-energy chemical laser through its beam control system. The beam control system acquired a ground target and guided the laser beam to the target, as directed by ATL's battle management system."

"By firing the laser through the beam control system for the first time, the ATL team has begun to demonstrate the functionality of the entire weapon system integrated aboard the aircraft," Boeing exec Scott Fancher said, in a statement.

...

According to the developers, the accuracy of this weapon is little short of supernatural. They  claim that the pinpoint precision can make it lethal or non-lethal at will. For example, they say it can either destroy a vehicle completely, or just damage the tires to immobilize it. The illustration shows a theoretical 26-second engagement in which the beam deftly destroys "32 tires, 11 Antennae, 3 Missile Launchers, 11 EO devices, 4 Mortars, 5 Machine Guns" -- while avoiding harming a truckload of refugees and the soldiers guarding them.

Can Buck Rogers be far behind?

Neat stuff.

plausably deniable in the first place.  Chemical laser?  Like a plasma?

You could conceivably rain down that hell on one target before the concept of an umbrella would strike you.

That sort of upmanship is digging a breakfast of sundown and rabbit tracks.

I suspect the US will take away quite a bit in terms of weaponry from the Large Hadron Collider. Still, in the 'fullness of time' these sorts of directed beams are easily defeated by current technology.  think martial arts, small circuitous movement combining a head on force..............

simple physics.

I'll wait for the handheld version...

But maybe by that time they'll also have lightsabers too.

This is nothing new, it is just more advanced and seems usable now. For at least 25 years, the technology has existed, for example, to make a 5W handheld laser weapon. Something like that would take a hell of a battery pack, probably belt mounted. But it could be done.

There are problems though, a CO2 laser does not output visible light. That makes it very hard to aim, remember why they used tracer rounds in fighter jets ? It's usefulness was very limited due to that.

So this is not really new technology, it is just an improvement of existing technology. What is a bit disturbing though, is the first thought that crosses "their" minds is covert ops.

Think about that.

Well, it ain't even covert for fuck's sake.  That is an argument that says, we can pinpoint muriatic acid from a U-2 height unto a mickey mouse watch on old Mohammeds wrist.  Lotsa plausible denials when it turns out to be mustard gas out of a spruce goose.

THIS IS NOT MY COUNTRY, GODDAMMIT!!!!  I; AM AN AMERICAN..We do not do shit like that................got it?  uhhhhhhhhhhh, I dint know?!? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An impressive piece of technology.

Probably like the oxygen-iodine laser used on the Airborne Laser (anti-ballistic system).

Like the report said it's not deniable when people melt in front of you and you know only America has the power to melt.
