Convention starts Monday - Concerned?

DENVER -- Police confirmed Wednesday that they found about a pound of sodium cyanide in a Denver hotel room where the body of a Canadian man, Abdirahman Dirie, was discovered earlier this week
"You have a suspicious substance that was found in a hotel room in conjunction with person being a foreign national, and we have a lot of questions and that is why we are assisting," Wright told the Post.
Dirie's sister told CanWest News Service that her brother had been on medication for the past three years to treat his schizophrenia, but that he was not a terrorist.

Is this a non-story? The guy was found on Monday and its estimated he was dead for 6 days. A pound of poison, in a room in a city where the DNC will hold its convention; would it have been a bigger story, or non story, prior to 9/11?

Would a 'terrorist act', and the jury is still out in this case if it is, during either convention influence the election for either candidate in November?

I never understood that during the cold war- the govt had us scared out of our minds.   we could all be nuked!   Why then did was not be allowed cyanide tablets?

Im sure its purpose was rat control.

I am a bit concerned, I would hate for anything to happen.  What is the likelyhood that this guy was/is just a distraction?

Well the city is expecting trouble and have rented a warehouse and put in fencing for trouble makers.  They plan to use stun guns.  The place was huge.  They wouldn't go to all that trouble if they didn't think something(s) were going to go on.  At the same time... this man was found on Monday.  They did not report on it or make it public until yesterday.  They think something is up... doesn't matter what we think, they are preparing for trouble.

I saw that news report last night.  It isn't stun guns, it is the fenced areas have stun devices, and barbed wire.  Sounds like one hell of a kennel.  I hate to say this, but I do hope I am bored by the activities that happen outside of the conventions.

It sounds like the democrats who want to close gitmo, now have their own gitmo. They just moved it to Denver..

Isn`t Colorado an "NRA" state?

Nuff said.

I do believe that the ACLU has said something like this and they were making an issue of water, food, etc. in the fenced area within the warehouse.  It looked the same as many places we have seen in the US at different times, except this one was inside a building.  People are kept like animals.  I do wonder what they expect to happen here.

Why "Free Speech" of course!
The Dems did the same thing in Boston in 2004, built "cages" for those who wanted to excercise their First Amendment Rights!
No bathrooms or water and nasty Boston Cops keeping them locked up.
The funny thing is that I bet that the Clintons will be voting for McCain so Hillary has another chance in 4 years!
Ah, to be a fly on the wall on their voting booths!

Vendaval -> RE: Dateline: Denver - One Pound cyanide, one foreign national, one DB (8/14/2008 6:56:24 PM)

This is definately not a good situation.  I hope that the investigation finds more about motive and targets.

The Emergency Response Card for sodium cyanide with guidelines if exposed can be found here -

"EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Sodium cyanide irritates and severely damages the tissues of the eyes, the skin, the respiratory tract, and the oral and gastrointestinal tract. Cyanides poison the vital organs of the body (for example, heart and lungs) including areas of the brain that regulate the proper functioning of those organs. Exposure may result in convulsions, unconsciousness, and death. Medical observation is indicated. "

Naw... A good situation is munching on a bag of almonds in a chemical facility, Vendaval. Evidently it smells just like cyanide.

I am none too happy with either party lately, when it comes to personal liberties. Anyone else going to vote Perot with me? How about...

DarkSteven -> RE: Dateline: Denver - One Pound cyanide, one foreign national, one DB (8/14/2008 8:59:08 PM)

I just Wikipedia'ed sodium cyanide.  The major use is to leach gold out of ore.  Well, that use has pretty much been killed by environmental laws.

I hate to say this, but I cannot see any legitmate reason he would have socium cyanide unless it was suicide.  Maybe that's the reason...

Rule -> RE: Dateline: Denver - One Pound cyanide, one foreign national, one DB (8/15/2008 1:50:10 AM)

He may have been a courier on a mission to deliver the cyanide to a democratic delegate to be used for whatever purpose.

Or it may have been planted on him by one of the USA secret three letter services.

Speculating about this is amusing, but ultimately for lack of evidence serves no purpose.

Leatherist -> RE: Dateline: Denver - One Pound cyanide, one foreign national, one DB (8/15/2008 1:52:20 AM)

Hopefully, he was on his way to assasinate the crew and cast of "barney and friends"

Vendaval -> RE: Dateline: Denver - One Pound cyanide, one foreign national, one DB (8/15/2008 4:59:29 AM)

He did not need that much just to off himself.  And there are much easier ways to go.

Yeah, I think about 100 mg. will do the job. As far as quantity, perhaps that was the only size container he could find. That;s a standard size for most reagents.
