I appreciate everyone's opinions and agree with those who say the neighbors did the right thing.

Is that right? I didn't know that? I always toyed with the idea of starting a BSDM swingers (yes, I know it doesn't generally go that way) club, where, everyone is a member and the members pay dues but that's not a "profit" per se, it goes to expenses and to the club (which the club would have a treasurer handle),. The trick would be to spend all the money (doesn't seem all that hard to do) and it would still be a club, with money.

You don't have to make a profit to be a business, you only have to take in money for your product or services, or to cover your expenses. I would suggest before starting a club you check into your local tax laws and business license requirements. We have our own business and have had many years with no profit but we still pay taxes and keep our license current.
