For anyone who feels that they don't neatly fall exactly into one of the two genders (transgendered, cross dressers, whatever else) which public restroom do you use?

On presumes the one coordinating with the gender you appear to be, but a burly man wearing stockings hardly passes for a woman, while I've seen some drop dead gorgeous men in full drag...

Just a thought, hoping to start discussion.

*Please note that I consider biological sex and gender to be independent factors*

I know several women who play with the gender boundary, and have watched with interest how discomforting a woman dressing as a man can make people. I think its hilarious watching people try to make what their mind can see conform to what their brain will accept. Almost makes me want to "butch" up in order toi experience it first hand. Am informed however I am too far gone in the girly stakes.

I play with a very Butch Dyke, very hello Daddi, and she often has problems in public toilets. She finds it funny, because if anyone actually looked, there are clear signs of femininity, manicured nails, earings, an *amazing* pair of boobs, but they just take the shaved head and the masculine clothes in and then stop looking. That coupled with her job (which is pretty Butch also - not a lumberjack but you're not far off) means that several times coming home from work and using a motorway service toilet she has had security pulled on her.

Standing in line recently with a couple of butch dyke friends I was asked if *I* was in the wrong queue and wasn't the ladies somewhere else!

And this is why there should be public toilets that are unisex.  I loathe gender seperation for such a thing like this.  If toilets were all simply cubicled, then that's that it would make things so much less complicated.

Many venues here in Oregon *do* have unisex toilets.  As long as the boys lift the seat and the girls use the trash for their feminine hygiene products it works great...when the boys and girls forget to play nice, unisex toilets can become far messier than gender specific ones.

I'd disagree to the extent that unisex toilets are or would be worse.  I have walked into some appalling female toilets(I never stay - I would much rather find another).  Over flowing bins, or even sanitary items just left in situ.  Unless there is a janitor or it's in a public area where you can complain, most women are terrible at hygeine.
I hear people complain about men not washing their hands when leaving - pffft - women come out of cubicles and then apply their lip stick in the mirror, wipe the smudged bits off their teeth, brush their hair and leave without even touching a tap.

Careful what you are kissing guys.

Interesting. I never thought about the "purpose" of male:female segregated restrooms before (having just assumed it was the norm).

Let's see. What is the purpose. As far as I know, from my college days mostly, guys don't mind peeing in front of women. They might mind defecating in the presence of anyone ... but peeing is no big deal. For defecation, there's always that stall door that you shut (except in the gay hangout bathrooms where they keep removing the door hinges such that the poor maintenance men have to practically rivet the doors with one-way screws). So, assuming the gay crowd hasn't removed all the hardware, the average guy couldn't care less if a woman came into "his" bathroom.

Turn the tables around. In my (male dominated) opinion, women would freak out if a guy were to casually walk into her bathroom, whether or not anything happened in plain sight (assuming all women's bathrooms have privacy providing stall doors). Why would they freak out? I don't know but I assume women are basically afraid of men. I may be wrong, but, I assume that. Otherwise, why would they freak out. I've seen it happen but only rarely, and usually by accident. Perhaps women just value their privacy more than men in this situation. After all, they never pee standing inches away from the president and ceo of the company all the while chit chatting about the weather, like men do all the time.

Anyway, my response is of little additional value because I just don't know. I'm working on my "assumptions" here that women fear men and men don't care. Assuming that, (which may not at all be a valid assumption as I'm guessing wildly here), then a crossdresser, whom I assume for this purpose is a man dressed as a woman, can walk into the men's restroom without problem. He can even pee standing up next to the VP without any problem.

On the other hand, if the crossdresser (assumed to be a man in woman's clothing for this purpose) walks into the ladies restroom, if they notice his bulging adam's apple or his huge ankles and feet or his height or shoulders, then they'll freak out with uncomfortablility (assuming my assumptions, of course). Not a good idea. Police will be called (women call the police muuuuuuuuuuch quicker than men in these situations) ... and they can do a strip search.

As for the end results ... I'm sure the strip search will determine which restroom you "belong" in. Hey, interesting question ... is it ILLEGAL to go into the "wrong" restroom? Has anyone been prosecuted for that that you know of?

Because women look and like making comparrisons, and men can't be bothered?  So women assume that men will automatically be peeking.
Because women think that men are less hygenic, which is bull.  I have never been in a mens toilet and found them dirty or with tissues and such all over the floor.(And don't even look in the sinks).
Don't ask.  But yes - let your imagination fly.

Moral of this is - women don't really want men to know just how filthy or pervy we are.

If someone is considering a sex change operation they are counseled to live as the other sex for a year - including restroom use.  This would include a man (by birth) sitting down on a toilet in a ladies room.

In other countries there are many unisex bathrooms, and there are not always doors on the stalls (like in China).  You may have to squat over a porcelain inlay instead of being able to sit on a toilet.  The first unisex bathroom I went to was in the US.  I was about 7 months pregnant and would have peed in front of a crowd if I had to - there are times like that when modesty goes out the window and the biological need takes over.  No one was flashing anyone else; people were just in there to do there business.  It was when Ally McBeal was popular, and it just hit me as a funny curiosity to see both men and women through the slit in the door.

I think that the comfort of others should be taken into consideration in most cases.  If you are portraying yourself well as someone of the opposite gender then use the bathroom that matches your dress.  I wouldn't suggest that a man in a dress try to use a sink as a urinal and shock everyone, but since almost no women's rooms have urinals it shouldn't be a problem.

  1. Wash or wipe your hands clean with a moist towellette.
  2. Adjust clothing. Pants should be pulled down in front a few inches. Skirts should be lifted. Underwear should be pulled down at the waistband or move the fabric at the crotch to one side.
  3. Wipe your labia area clean.
  4. Using either hand, make a "V" with your first and second finger and spread the inside of your labia minora. (the INNER lips) Beginners may want to try using the fingers from both hands for better control.
  5. Lift to the desired angle, then pee. (If you don't spread and lift, it could run down your leg.)
  6. Wipe your labia if necessary.
  7. Wash your hands and you're done!

LOL'ing at the "run down your leg" comment.

....which public restroom do you use?

Neither. A confrontation in the men's can easily turn violent before one can even think of something clever to try and calm the situation, and using the women's comes with the risk of jail. Its a lot of anguish over something as simple as a full bladder, but to me, it is what it is. At the risk of sounding all negative,  it's a lose-lose kind of a thing in my opinion.

I use the Ladies except in supermarkets and shopping centres when I tend to use the disabled toilets (on account of kids being taken in with mother).

I can remember once being caught short when there were no toilets, some years back in Warsaw. I thought 'sod it' and went up an alley behind a row of shops, hitched up my skirt and started.. I look round, some twenty or thirty yards further down there's this guy who's also caught short. I saw him moments before he saw me.

I've never seen a man run so fast whilst peeing.. In fact it's the only time I've ever seen a man running fast whilst peeing.

I am fraid there are so many areas of prudes that unisex would not work.  I am from the applachia area, they are so prudish here it is not funny.  It is still taught that women are only good for bearing male babies, barefoot and pregnant is the motto in my area.  I am considered an oddball in my family because i enjoy sex.

Mothers even object to having a male infant's diaper being changed in front of their little girls.  No wonder at 16 she becomes pregnant.  When i took my sons age 8-10 into the ladies room with me just for safety reasons.  There had been some kidnapping of young boys in my area, some mothers were upset i told them to get a life my sons were more important than their stupid prudish morals.

My sons are now healthy sexual adults my niece whose mother is a prude got pregnant at 17.

Unfortunatly the perverts would ruin it for everyone.

And why would that matter?  Last time I checked, the 'little thingy" has nothing to do with urination.
