I rent a room from a family- and I've lived here for a couple of years now.

Lately- the electrical appliances have taken to blowing the f**k up, and generally scaring the poo out of me. First, an outlet blew, blowing the plastic plug piece across my room. Later on that week, my hair dryer quit in a flurry of sparks and smoke, and this morning, a 2 day old lightbulb exploded out of the fan, showering hot broken glass all over me at 3 in the morning.

Wtf?

I have no clue about electric problems- what's going on?

Dang girl, I don't know but that can't be safe. Is it happening anywhere else in the house?

You have a short somewhere.  Have an electrician check it out.  If you don't know what you're doing it's a very easy way to die.

If you rent and it's a short in the system then the owner should take care of it.  Well hopefully they will.

Hope you have a good surge protector for your computer.

I have nooo intention of doing it myself- I'd blow up the entire house with a screwdriver. I guess the task begins of convincing the landlady to do something about it.

Well, you could always casually mention the impending lawsuit if you get injured as a result of one of these explosions ...

I wouldn't be there.  How much time does it take to start a house fire?  How much time to lose more than a hair dryer? What's next?  Your computer... your life? If the landlords know about your stuff blowing up and haven't addressed it yet... I would be history, even if I didn't have enough money to be history.  Electrical fires are a bit different than a plumbing problem.

Electrical fires seem to convince folks to act... even the probability of one has motivating value.  Not to mention that you aren't asking them to replace you belongings, just to fix the problem.

Good luck, stay safe, and this definitely gave me a new idea for electrical play.

All joking aside, you are right.  Electrical shorts are nothing to put off fixing.  If it's been a week, it's been a week to long.

If they won't pay, get someone yourself and hold back the money from your rent and start looking for  new place to live.  But they should fix it, it's not like if a fire starts they are not in danger too.

electrical fires can smolder between the walls for awhile before one actually makes enough heat and smoke to be noticed.  people die in fires they never knew existed because they go to bed and all's well so they think.  it's nothing to mess with.  get professional help pronto!  i've lived thru a house fire, it's no fun at all, damn scary actually!

Its not a short, it's an overvoltage problem. Someone wired it wrong, sending power through your neutral wires (making what's supposed to be a 110 outlet a 220 outlet), or an appliance is malfunctioning, sending voltage through the ground. Or there's a problem with the power companies' transformer, that's not very  uncommon.  It can start a fire very easily, you need to get it checked out.

Highly unlikely to be a short without some other evident problems...over voltage seems a more likely common cause for symptoms such as described, easily checked by either the power company, or yourself.

I was about to say the same. It sounds like the voltage is too high, or that you are having power surges. Either way it needs checking sooner rather than later.
