Jim Brown and Jerry Rice are the two names you hear most often, and I'm not going to deny that they were all-time greats, but I'm sayin' right here that the greatest football player of all time was Otto Graham.

I bet half o' you whippersnappers never even heard of Otto Graham.

Well, take a look at the all-time leaders in passer rating.  Otto Graham comes in tied for 14th at 86.6 (with Philip Rivers--ha!).  So how on earth does that make him the greatest player of all time?  Well, another thing you'll notice is that with two exceptions, EVERY quarterback ranked above Graham was active in 2007.  And those two exceptions are all-time greats themselves: Steve Young and Joe Montana.  Why is that?  Well, as any fan of the game knows, passer efficiency ratings have increased tremendously over the decades, and there's no end in sight.  When a has-been tub-o'-lard like Chad Pennington ranks 9th all time in passer efficiency rating, it tells you that passer efficiency ratings can't simply be compared from era to era.  (I'm hoping you're all going to agree readily that Chad Pennington is not the ninth-best quarterback of all time.)  You have to look at passer ratings WITHIN their era.

Who had the highest career passer rating before Otto Graham?  The answer is Sid Luckman, at 75.0.  Now Sid Luckman was also an all-time great, but that's not the point.  The point is that Graham smashed the previous record by over 15%.  That would be like someone having a career passer rating today of 111.8.  And that's unheard of.

Just in case you're still not convinced: Otto Graham played both ways, too, and in his rookie season (1946), he had five interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.  That was in addition to leading the league in touchdown passes (17--against only 5 interceptions) and putting together a tidy 112.1 passer rating.  Unthinkable today.

Otto Graham is the greatest football player who ever lived!

Now see, I'd pick Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott, because I was crushing on them big time back then.

But I guess I have a different criteria rating...heh.

I'd imagine Kenny Stabler would be somewhere on the list.

If I can remember the name of a player for longer than five minutes.........they are number one or not. One of my friends used to hook me up with cheat sheet as a bartender. So, I could say..........they shouldn't have put that quarterback in because of..............whatever. And if things got too technical I could get ice, open beer, pour a drink, locate the words to the Bears song so people could get it right......once.  Now, my job is among those who "represent" is to look alive when its important and go back to doing whatever I was doing. My friends know, to cut into a conversation if it gets too deep.

I did go to watch a Dolphin's-Lion's game once. I have no clue who scored the most baskets.

my favorite is Chuck Bednarik -- the last of the 2 way players. He clobbered Frank Gifford so hard he couldn't even play the next season.

Gawds, I'm a 9er fan and I'm almost ashamed to say the first name that popped into my head was not Rice or Montana.. it was Johnny Unitas.

Lam, I'd say Rice is the greatest WR of all time; Jim Brown would get my vote for greatest all around player of all time, though.

The Graham family has stated that was only a dirty rumor, started by Lou Groza.

Johnny Unitas certainly, although one has to grudgingly admit that Broadway Joe did what he had to when it counted.

Greetings all,

I have to say Jim Brown as well. My dad is from Cleveland.  I was trained at an early age to say this...

In the modern era, I think Emmit Smith had the best field vision of any player I've ever seen.  Some folks just have the longevity, like Jerry Rice, incredible talent, stayed healthy and played for a winning franchise.

My favorite player, the one I think had the most untapped skills and was under utilized every place he played, was Eric Metcalf.  He was an amazing running back and special teams player.

well wishes ~ fairer than she (the football slut)
