There can always be a good argument made for Unitas, but Namath..... his numbers don't hold up, IMO, and he really ought to thank his lucky stars that he got the PR he did.

Gawds, I'm a 9er fan and I'm almost ashamed to say the first name that popped into my head was not Rice or Montana.. it was Johnny Unitas.

Life long Niner fan and former season ticket holder - But far-n-way my favorite players are LT {Lawrence Taylor}, Jack Tatum and Michael Irvin.... The first thing one sees when they walk into my office, is a picture of LT and a signed copy of his ''56'' Giant's jersey in an air tight frame on the wall....

My favorite head coaches are Madden and Jimmy Mora {senior}. I'm a little biased there though.....Mora is one of my father's best friends/golfing buddies and next door neighbor....And, coach of the 2nd best line-backing corps ever to grace the NFL. I always mention that around him to get a rise.....[;)]

I never said anything about his numbers, or his being in contention for any 'Top' list, I said that when it counted, you have to admit that he delivered the goods to beat the Colts in the Super Bowl.

Ohhh yes, if we're talking coaches I'd say Madden and Walsh.  Madden rocked.

That was an awesome group of LBs, wasn't it? Now, I don't know if you tell Mora that just to fuck with him, or do you think there was another group better? From your post, I'd guess the Giants crew, with LT. If so, not a shabby pick [:D] The Steelers boasted 2 different LB units that I'd put near the top, too: Greene, Lloyd, Brown, and Kirkland, and Ham, Russell, Lambert.

Again, PR [:D]

Matt Snell controlled the clock for New York, Johnny Beverly had the game of his life, and there was no healthy Unitas under center for Baltimore. Namath was a rifle-armed showboat that found himself in the right place, at the right time.

Now, Roger Staubach...... there was a quarterback......

Oh.....I absolutely do it to mess with him - But I also think Swilling, Jackson, Johnson and Mills were among the best line-backing corps ever to play the game. Swilling was just phenomenal... A  ''unsung'' version of LT if you ask me.....

On the other hand tho.....I thought LT, Banks, Pepper Johnson and Carson were the best group that ever played the game....

As for the Steeler's corps ...... Sure they were great… And while they had tremendous heart, they could never match up in the athleticism department with the other two. The Saints and Giants line-backing corps just exhibited brilliant athleticism at every step of the way….

Awesome player, and deserving of consideration. Heck, I'd add Barry Sanders in there, too.

igor2003 -> RE: The greatest football player of all time was... (8/11/2008 6:51:59 PM)

Over the years I have heard the same discussion over and over.  "Who's the best football player of all time?"  That is like trying to compare apples to oranges....to grapes, to pineapples, to peaches, and any 6 or 8 other fruits or veggies.  How do you compare a quarterback to a defensive tackle?  How do you compare a wide receiver to a place kicker?  Even comparing quarterbacks to other quarterbacks is like comparing Red Delicious to Granny Smiths.  Especially when trying to determine the "best" by statistics.  Let's say two quarterbacks have equal stats, but one has a more accurate arm and the other has better receivers.  On paper they are going to look the same.  Some running backs have miles and miles of running yards total, but other older backs didn't have as long of a season.  Maybe that stat should not be total yards, but average yards per season.  And again, which running backs had the best offensive line to run behind?

Who's the best football player of all time?  I'll vote for one of the coaches on the sideline calling the plays.  But then do you vote for the one with the best win/loss record, or the one with the most Super Bowl wins?

I think I'll just watch the game and enjoy it as is, instead of trying to decide something that is totally undecidable.

Lam, I'd say Rice is the greatest WR of all time; Jim Brown would get my vote for greatest all around player of all time, though.

Walter Payton gets my vote for best all around....he could run, catch, and throw (some years he was also the Bears' #3 QB).

Anyone who put forth a name other than JIM BROWN needs to go back to the record book do some reading and get back here and apologise for your error....that is the nature of things....

Aww, thanks, Utopian, but that photo represented something I used to be.  Perhaps another photo in time, but for now it's just a nice memory.

I agree with what you're saying, but this kind of attitude also contributes to forgetting the stars of the past.  We all just sit around and enjoy the game and never think about the guys who played decades ago because we never saw them ourselves.  The other night on Pardon the Interruption, Wilbon said that Barry Bonds and Willie Mays were obviously the two greatest Giants who ever lived.  Excuse me?  I think Christy Mathewson would have something to say about that.  If I had a draft and could pick Bonds, Mays, or Mathewson, I'd pick Mathewson.  I don't think it's close, actually.  But Bonds and Mays are black and played during Wilbon's lifetime; Mathewson was white and probably played before Wilbon's grand-daddy.
