Well, Number Six, I don't know about all the other males, black or white, but as I exit my 30s in a few short months, I'm taking the steps to make sure what happend to Isaac (even as death is unavoidable) doesn't happen to me. After all, I see my doctor every other month for a routine check up (and that's after having my prostate check out two months ago).

EbonyPhoenix,

I have read in passing (not that it makes a viable difference when or where) that although white males are very unlikely to seek medical attention or service for day to day things (thereby raising their risk of succumbing to surprises that could have been caught) black males are even less likely by some humongous factor, to do so.

While I guess that's part of the black experience, that is one that everyone could do without and that's preventable.  The rest of it?  We'll see.

This was nice...

.... But even after becoming the biggest thing in Memphis since Elvis, Hayes bought a house in Longview Heights at Frank and Lauderdale Street. Even cooler for us kids, he kept about half-a-dozen of the latest cars parked on the street in front, and we'd see them every morning on the way to school.
After school, it was a regular deal to see him out in his yard playing with his kids or throwing the football around with some of the older fellas -- while dressed in rainbow pants, leather outfits, and monkey-fur boots. It was the best thing in the world. And seeing him on such a regular basis in our neighborhood let us know that whatever we dreamed of, we could achieve.

Din't follow Bernie Mac all that much, but I hope things went easily for him.

But Issac? Damn... 65 is way to early for a talent like that to leave. Yeah, he'll be remembered most for "Shaft" (once voted one of the top ten most recognizable themes in US history) But the man did so much more. Hell, how many of us had our first sexual experiences to his music, or Barry Whites?

The world is a substaintially less sexy place without his voice.  :(

I actually had the pleasure of working with both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes this past Feb/Mar on the upcoming movie, "Soul Men".  Both were super nice and I had lunch with Mr. Hayes one day.  I even gave him my dessert because it was the last one the caterer had and he had wanted one.  He suffered a stroke a while back and was very, very fragile, but still the epitomy of "cool".

Bernie had pneumonia then and had to have oxygen tanks everywhere he went.  We had to cut our filming short a couple of days because he was so ill.

Two very sad passings indeed. [&o]

You were indeed blessed :)

Screw him and his hypocritical "Go ahead and make fun of every other religion but if you talk about Scient-fruity little club-ology I'm walking" bullshit. Hope hes having fun on the mothership.

Another talented individual gone. I did not know he also wrote for Sam and Dave including songs like "Soul Man" and "Hold on, I am coming" and worked for Otis Redding.

A lot of people understimate the effect of Stax artists on all sorts of music.

I was lucky enough to exchange a few words with Isaac Hayes, backstage after another artist's gig, years ago.  I have to say, I thought he was the coolest person I'd encountered in my then young life.  So modest and unassuming it was difficult to tell him how important Hot Buttered Soul and Black Moses (God!) had been to me and my circle.  An awesome figure, a man of real stature and I'm sure he will live on so.

GreedyTop -> RE: Isaac Hayes dead at 65 (8/12/2008 7:29:13 AM)

thats cool, RL ..
