I'm curious - did anyone watch the opening ceremony last night?  I know there are a lot of political and social issues when talking about China ... but I was in awe at the spectacular show they put on last night.  It was precise, rich in the Chinese culture and held my interest throughout.  The torch lighting actually gave me goosebumps.  Wish I could have been there to see it in person.

I know... I know ... I acknowledge the issues involved...

But aside from that, it was great to see the athletes who were there enjoying what they've accomplished that night.  There are a great many human interest stories that revolve around the athletes, their experiences, challenges and triumphs.  Just tonight a swimmer from South Korea won a gold in the 400m freestyle - in 2004 he disqualified with a false start when he was 14.  What a great personal triumph that is for him. 

That's how I choose to view the Olympics - the political issues are there, granted.  But there is something to be said for celebrating achievements and learning about the different athletes and sharing the excitement of the games with my kids.

Great show and awome fire works. Being lifted some 200 ft in the air to make a full circle around the arena takes courage and or a lot of money. Talk about having faith in mechanics. 

Like you said, as for the show itself, I give it two thumbs up. China and Olympic / international policy is a seperate issue.

It was extremely impressive.  My friends and I were trying to speculate how much money went into that.  It was indeed a wowser of a show.

Just a side comment.
In terms of "politicising" the games,it is the sanctimonious western commentators who are the main offenders.
I will be very surprised if some media "show off" doesnt make a "nuisance" of himself.

I hope the Chinese authorities crack down... hard

According to this story the Chinese authorities need to crack down on their own.  Volleyball coach's father in law and his daughter were attacked at knife point, and the father in law was killed.

No confirmation what it's related to, but sad none-the-less and not good at all.

I am really bummed that we lost the whole NBC transmission the night of the opening ceremony.  Hoping to find someone who used TiVo or a DVD to record it.
 
One of my boys and I spent most the afternoon watching the volleyball and swimming matches.  The long bicycle race was a real test of endurance with the heat + humidity + high altitude.

Vendeval, do you have Comcast Cable or another TV service with "On Demand?"   Comcast is showing the Olympics as an "On Demand" feature in the Sports & Fitness section.

Have you tried looking around http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/mostpopular/index.html 

I have it recorded, but not sure about the copyright issues of sharing it.  Might even want to check to see if the CBC has an archived version available.

I also recommend using the plugin for microsoft.  It allows for watching up to 4 events live, and in HD.

Glad it helped.

Speaking of obscure research, did you know there is only one olympic event that is not seperated by gender... Do you know what it is?

Yes, Equestrian is the only sport in the olympics where men and women compete head to head.

Say what you will about the Chinese, they know how to put on one hell of a show. I’ve always loved watching the parade of nations in any Olympics. How often do you get to view so many beautiful women – real women, not the made up women you get in beauty pageants – from around the world? I also enjoy seeing the excitement and enthusiasm on so many young faces.

As for the games themselves I love women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming and diving, women’s track... well... you get the idea. Some of the men’s competitions are interesting too. I also love the stories you get like the aforementioned Park from South Korea. That’s what great about the Olympics, the stories don’t always end with the games, sometimes they carry over to the next games. Anybody remember this young lady learning a hard lesson about showboating in the Torino winter games? I’m hoping we’ll see her again during the 2010 games in Vancouver, to see if she can get that monkey off her back.
