Bush arrives in Seoul, anti-U.S. protest fizzles

SEOUL (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush arrived in South Korea on Tuesday for talks focused on communist North Korea and was greeted by a minor protest aimed mostly at his host instead of a big anti-U.S. rally that had been expected.

In a surprise boost for Bush, who has largely managed to set aside prickly issues with Seoul, it was a rally in the city centre in support of what is likely to be his last visit to East Asia as president that ended up attracting a huge crowd.

Police fire water cannon at Bush protesters

Police fired water cannons at thousands of protesters Tuesday as President Bush got a volatile reception in South Korea at the start of his three-nation Asian trip. Dueling demonstrations reflected mixed sentiments in this U.S. ally, where public opinion surveys remain generally positive about America, though many people decry Washington for a variety of issues. Bush will meet Wednesday with President Lee Myung-bak for the third time since the conservative, pro-American leader took office in February.

Some 18,300 police were on high alert with riot gear and bomb-sniffing dogs to maintain order during Bush's brief visit, the National Police Agency said. About 30,000 people gathered in front of Seoul City Hall for an afternoon Christian prayer service supporting Bush's trip. Large South Korean and U.S. flags were held aloft by balloons overhead along with a banner reading, "Welcome President Bush."

Obviously they`re "evil doers" and about to endorse Obama.

What do you expect?

What's funny is how Reuters desperately attempt to put a positive spin on Bush "[being] greeted by a minor protest aimed mostly at his host instead of a big anti-U.S. rally that had been expected."

So, he wasn't greeted with an overwhelming show of joy of adoration then, aye?

The other hilarious bit from Reuters: "In a surprise boost for Bush, who has largely managed to set aside prickly issues with Seoul, it was a rally in the city centre in support of what is likely to be his last visit to East Asia as president that ended up attracting a huge crowd."

I see! So the South Koreans are really celebrating the end of the cretin's presidency! Rejoice, rejoice: he's out of our collective faces soon! (Unfortunately, his disgusting legacy is there to last [>:] .) And what's this? Reuters effectively say that Bush has 'set aside' his differences with Seoul: so, not much of a success there, then, just a little visit for the fun of it, since nothing concrete will come out of it?

Sanity, you really shot yourself in the foot with this one: what are you trying to say, that the Associated Press is prejudiced against your hero, hmmm? Because Reuters' critique is more subtle, but it's still there for all to see.

I agree.  A much better example would be the wonderful obituary that the AP sent out within hours of Tony Snow dying.  That was journalism at its best.[:'(]

The South Koreans are celebrating just like the rest of the entire world with an exception of the last bastion of Bushies here on CM[8D]

Thank you, kitten - that's what I was waiting for. Congratulations, you were able to see it (even if others cannot). Good eye!

But I'm sure that you meant to say that  their bias is "...still there for all to see". You see, they're not meant to be critiques, they're meant to be news articles - yet as you yourself attest, they are not.

Those two stories are worlds apart though I'm sure both authors believe they're hard news... I doubt they can see their own partisan subtext, even if some of us can. The point is, if the information we receive on a daily basis has no journalistic integrity to it then how are any of to us trust that the opinions we form as a result are valid? Reuters and AP are the big two wire services, and TV news isn't any better.

Neither is NPR...

Your re-writing of the history of what took place over there is almost as bad as the hatchet job AP originally did. Question - do you believe the new storyline that you and kitten just made up, or are you just being silly.

I think you believe it...

According to the articles, the President was greeted with the adoration of far more people than were protesting against... depending on which author you believe... American beef, the President of South Korea, or President Bush.
