Sen. Obama, Please Cancel Your Ads During The Olympics
Posted by Sharon Cobb on Monday, August 4, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Last Monday, I was researching a story about the advertisers who bought advertising during the Olympics. The purpose of my research was to tell you who they are, and to boycott them because of China's support of genocide in Darfur.

Well, to my surprise, I found out Barack Obama's campaign had purchased 5 million dollars worth of ads to run during the games.

...

It's very possible Barack Obama isn't aware of the ad buy, though something tells me that after today, he'll know about it. And what he does with that info once he knows about it will be very important.

This is the first time in the 3 years I've been blogging that I've faced a conflict of interest. I know if I was still with MSNBC, I would have run with the story when I found out about this. On the other hand, I've been 100 percent open with my readers about being a supporter of Obama's, and, a supporter of stopping the genocide in Darfur. On the other hand...

There are no other hands. I can't hold this story back any longer or I compromise my journalistic integrity, which is something I've accused other bloggers of lacking, and I can't be a hypocrite.

Senator Obama, it is my hope you will cancel your ads with NBC for the China Olympics, and put the money into advertising on the Darfur Olympics, being held Aug. 8-15.

Does anyone know ... has Obama come out with a position on the genocide in Dafur?

I googled "Obama on Darfur" and got this (as well as many other links):

They should both just cancel all their ads, people already know who they are going to vote for, that is if they plan to vote at all.

Another thing I don't understand, why do they put signs in people's front yards ? When you get to that voting machine do you think "Oh I saw a sign for that guy on someone's tree lawn, maybe I should vote for him" ?

None of their ads address any real issues, so just vote based on looks I guess.

What I took from his Berlin speech was that he figures our troops from Iraq will be welcomed as liberators when he sends them there.  I'm sure that will change, as he replaces ideology with actual information, and gets the poll numbers back.

Assuming they aren't in the really crappy yard of the guy who parks on his lawn, has parties at all hours, and makes the neighbors nervous, yard signs are a highly effective form of campaigning, Termy.

Yeah, owning the failure to do anything about Darfur stings a little, doesn`t it?

"And the band played on".......

How about "President Bush, don`t go to the games and don`t give the Chinese the legitimacy they crave"?

Where`s the backbone?

servantforuse -> RE: Sen. Obama, Please Cancel Your Ads During The Olympics (8/5/2008 7:22:26 AM)

You'd be surprised.  [;)]

In candidate school (yes, they have classes for people who have registered to run for an elected office), they explain that a major key to being elected is name recognition.  It isn't the only thing, of course, but you won't get elected if people at the polls haven't ever heard of you.

While stance on issues and "respectability" in the community are important, there are a dozen other areas that can make or break a candidate.  These "tricks" hold less weight in the large, national elections, but are the backbone of local campaigning.

Like fucking Hell, O59.  Staying the fuck out of that disaster belongs above the fireplace, until we pull it down to run on a float in the Rose Parade.

Obama is a Chicago polititian with some very suspect friends and supporters. Like he cares about individual rights in China..Please.

slvemike4u -> RE: Sen. Obama, Please Cancel Your Ads During The Olympics (8/5/2008 7:23:49 PM)

Bush is President,if he cared about the rights of individual Chinese citizens he could have chose to keep the team home. The fact is Americans will be watching whether or not Obama buy's ad time. And while we're at it ,if everyone is so upset how about boycotting any of the numerous industries that will buy ad time

bipolarber -> RE: Sen. Obama, Please Cancel Your Ads During The Olympics (8/5/2008 7:50:15 PM)

If Bush gave a shit about individual human rights in China, he should have canceled China's "most favored nation" trade status. Same with Clinton. Beats the crap out of me why we are supporting a government that runs its own people over with tanks.

Thadius -> RE: Sen. Obama, Please Cancel Your Ads During The Olympics (8/5/2008 7:56:29 PM)

Firm,

I have to disagree with you on this one.  The advertising has nothing to do with supporting China, the money is staying here.  I have no problems with folks wanting to protest the Chinese positions and actions.  That should not be used to punish our athletes, many of whom have trained their whole lives for the coming games.

Celebrating our athletes and the Olympic games should not suffer because of the politics of this year's host country.  Just think about how little the Jesse Owens performances would have meant if there wasn't coverage.

Owner,

Should we make the same assumptions about prominent Dems that are on their way over?  Such as Mayor Daley, outspoken supporter and friend of Obama?

Just my opinions,

Well ... actually, Thadius ... I'm pretty much with you on this.

My point was to simply ask what his position was, to see if he was/is consistent with his position.

It seems like he is mute on the issue.  Which is one of his better political decisions, seems to me.

But I suspect he'll catch flak from his left for it.

Btw, there is an "Open Letter" to him in one of the lefty mags (The Nation, I think) which kinda begs, kinda threatens him to not stray from the left so much ... or else.
