My credit card statement came today. On it is a charge from a teck online store. $250.


I did not charge this.

I cancelled the card for a new number. Asked to be sent a dispute form to not pay it.

I called the 800 number, she wont tell me what I bought or where it was shipped. Even tho it is my charge card. The most she would say is that it was not shipped to my home.

So I filed a police report.

Any advice?

No other charges on the bill are wrong.

So i cant know what I did not buy, do I get stuck paying it?

I own 4 computers in my house so- yeah- the info could have leaked.

Let the police deal with it. They can get a court order forcing the retailer to provide them the details of the transaction.

To answer the title of your post directly, yes, you do have a right ot know.

I advise not to rely on their spoken word. They can always deny conversations. Send all communication to them in writing and get all communication from them in writing. Also press to have someone sign any correspondence personally so you have a means of holding a real person responsible.

Take a gander at the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and the Truth in Lending Act. this well help inform you of their abilities and disabilities, and also of your own rights.

There are lots of means of corporate protection - that should really be read as lots of ways for them to duck liability and stick it to you. Plausible deniability isn't just a term associated with high intrigue.

Look on the back of your credit card statement for the proper way to dispute a charge.  You don't have to pay it in the meantime.  The credit card company will force the merchant to prove that you charged it.  Calling the credit card company does NOT preserve your rights, although they may get the dispute started for you.

It most likely is a simple error in processing someone else's order.  Seriously.  And just because Apple made a mistake on someone else's order does not mean you have the right to that other person's name or address.

I actualy work for a corp that files Fraud cases for severial Financial Instutions (FI's) It is my personal job to send those forms, and determine if the case is fraud or a dispute. ( you order a green sweater they send you blue.. it is not fraud folks... it's a merchant dispute.( just sayin')

Untill they have the sales slip from the merchant they dont know what was ordered. Sales slips are not copied to every FI for every transaction. The info that does come through is where, how much, what store, and they can get where shipped to easily. Sales slips take a few days usualy... and the merchant has 15 days to turn it in when it is requested. Since it is an ongoing investigation.. and a MOTO (online not face to face) transaction there is no signature, or pin needed to commit the fraud. Just sign the aff. and turn it back in within the alloted time. your FI should give you a provisonal credit after you turn it in.

what they bought doesnt really matter as much as just getting the aff turned in.

I know it is fustrating.. but try to be patient and let them do the research and sending in the paperwork for you.

I'm a CC merchant (work on the other end of CC transactions as Gwyn) and yes indeed do your part in the filing of the dispute properly and in a timely manner, and don't worry about it too much once that is taken care of. The paperwork is pretty short and simple for the victim to fill out.

The CC company's Fraud Dept. will then do the work, and in the end, if it indeed turns out to be fraud (stolen CC info) the merchant will end up eating the loss, not you. Should it be a mistake, the merchant or the CC company will make the proper adjustment.
