I am perplexed by what appears to be a common habit on these forums. When people ask a question, others reply that they should search the forums or sometimes they even give a link to a previous thread. This seems rude to me. If you have told your friends your ideas on a particular subject, they all know that you like the color purple. Then a new person has entered your circle of friends and asks what your favorite color is. Do you refer them to the logs of discussions you've already had with other people. If a newby walks up to you during a munch and says they have a question about how to approach someone, do you tell them that you have already had that discussion and refer them to a book on the shelf to get their answers from. I come to a forum for answers to questions because I want some semblance of discussion and discourse. If I only want to read what others have discussed, then I can google the information. I understand that if a topic has been discussed at length then you may not be interested in discussing it again. That's fine. Skip the thread.

I guess my question is... is it considered acceptible to refer someone to another thread rather than answering their question, or not replying at all. Or is this considered to be rude and people just do it anyways?

i don't think it's rude to give links to another thread that has already covered the topic, it is an easy way to post a lot of info that might be helpful to the OP.

Why is is rude to point someone to answers rather than taking the time to answer it themselves? If someone has something new to offer rather than regurgitating the same answers ad infinitum, they're more than welcome to, but it's hardly rude to point someone to existing information.

Not to mention, by searching past threads, answers posted by people who no longer participate on the forums become accessible.. thereby broadening the answer pool.

When you have spent more time here, you will see the same topics and or questions repeated over and over. It is usually the simplest way to get people the information they seek.

As in so much of life, much depends, I think, on the tone of the response. It's one thing to say "You might find Thread X helpful." It's another to say, or imply, "Goddamnit, you moron newbie! Use the f'ing search function, would you?"

Those of us who've been here a bit sometimes forget several things:

(a) The demure Search link doesn't leap out at one. I was here for ages before I noticed it.

(b) The search engine isn't always as helpful as one might like. I've searched for threads I know are there (because I started them), yet been unable to come up with the magic words to recall them.

(c) Every question, however old it may seem to us, is new to the person asking it.

Sometimes people want to hear opinions from those that are currently posting, NOW.
Not people that were here 2 years ago, remember that many people are joining daily,
sometimes I want to hear the opinions of the newer members also.
{Those that have joined/or started posting withing the last 3-6 months}.

I think it can be a great resource to post links, but unless the question has been asked recently,
I don't mind the "repeat" questions, and I always feel that people have the option not to read or respond if they are not interested or tired of the question.

I see nothing wrong with referring someone to a previously asked question. Theres nothing rude about sending a person to a place where the question was answered in great detail. They will still probably have their thread answered too, so they are getting help from 2 or more areas then.

I personally dont see this as the same as someone asking me my favorite color, or something else...But hey, to each their own!

ETA: For the record, I referred a new user to a previous thread, and he was quite thankful for the info and didnt see it as rude...

I've been on forums where the rules advised new people not to even post until they had spent a decent amount of time searching the archives for answers to newby questions... those who failed to do so were told bluntly that they were rude to ignore that bit of 'etiquette'...

Here at CollarMe, the convention seems to be either to helpfully provide a link, or to point out the availability of the search function... not exactly 'rudeness' in the grand scheme of things.

It is a shortcut, but then again, so is expecting other people to repeat themselves so that you don't have to catch up.

It is a good question. Those who have been around are tired of answering the same basic questions over and over, especially when there is such an easy way for the other person to find it. Why do we need to do your work for you? (This I learned on the Gorean threads). There are numerous search engines just generally and this site has one as well.

I mean there are a gazillion threads on "spanking", "breath play", "cbt", "what is gor".... To use your example, why would a person come into a discussion and expect people to repeat everything that was just said? Others ought to stop new discussions to go back for the umpteenth time to repeat what's been repeated ad nauseum?

In fact, this question has come up a number of times and here are two responses I've written in the past. I hope you enjoy them and that they illustrate in a humorous way the answer to your question.

At least once a week I read a "where do I find" or "how do you" kind of email on a message board that I frequent. The answer over and over is "Google it." The word "Google" seems to have gone from a Proper Name to a verb. As in "I googled a recipe for 3 cheese quessadillas."

Now, I don't mean to criticize, but it seems that your marketing department is a bit out of touch. If over and over, the answer is "google it," I'm thinking that you need to work a little harder on getting the word out that your company runs a search engine for the world wide web. Clearly people have never heard of you or the work you do. I myself am a fan and use your service all the time but evidently the fan base is woefully small.

Perhaps you might consider putting an ad up on Craig's List so that folks can hear about your company?

Although I seldom see people being specifically rude, it does get tiring to see the same basic questions asked over and over again. We are not necessarily referring to topics that were covered two years ago, a year ago, or even last month. We are talking about topics (ex: What is the difference between a sub and a slave?) that have been discussed in the previous couple of days, hours, or are ongoing discussions two topics down from the new one. It makes many people wonder if the OP can't read or is simply lazy.
That is what gets frustrating.

I don't see it rude to contribute additional information to what others are contributing. This way you receive both current replies and past replies. Why limit the perspectives that are shared?

Yeah people seem to be fairly nice about it here. In some other niche communities, especially I've noticed some related to cracking etc, the tendency tends to be to call someone a fuckbag and sometimes point out there is a search function.
