“We have found an innovative way to kill the virus by finding this small region of HIV that is unchangeable,” Dr. Sudhir Paul of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston said. Dr. Paul and Dr. Miguel Escobar aren’t talking about just suppressing HIV – they’re talking about destroying it permanently by arming the immune system with a new weapon lab tests have shown to be effective."http://www.king5.com/topstories/stories/NW_072908HEB_hiv_breakthrough_KS.14f198d5.html

It would probably still be years away but oh wow this is fantastic. The rates of HIV and AIDS are horrific, I really hope this continues to be successful.

Why was this buried in the news I wonder?

Because people can't make lots of money off of it?  Or can't win an election off of it?  I don't know.
The best news always seemed to be buried under mounds of crap.

They've been close on Aids in the past only to be let down.  Hopefully when this goes to human trials
it remains viable.

There's a lot of research going on about how to beat HIV and this may be significant or it may not. Press releases prior to conclusive results from animal and/or human trials is really pretty pointless.

There was a clinical trial of a potential vaccine a few years back that failed but that got a lot of hype in the press before it started.

This is a blog by a doctoral candidate doing HIV research that I keep an eye on:

I saw this within the last week, but can't remember were.  But it wasn't too far off the beaten track...
