Now, I have fairly eclectic tastes when it comes to comestibles, but even I, who has had fried grasshoppers, iguana tacos, mountain oysters, rollmops, Durian, and a whole bunch of other weird shit, have to pause at this...

I like eel sushi and eel sauce on other types of sushi.
But why put it through a grinder to drink it?

I can't believe you tried mountain oysters.

Will it get me the same way as strolling into a walk-in fridge with electrical problems? I'm in.

Yea, I am usually open to trying new things and like most sea food, but I would have trouble with this one.

“Drink it for the vitamins—love it for that great eel head flavor!”

I'm just not sure I ever want to know what eel head flavor is.

Different people find different things suitable to eat. Used to go to this one restaurant, they served mussels. As I ate my steak, and watched people chow down on their mussels I couldn't help but think "Damn, you are pretty much eating barnacles".

Another place had kalamari on the menu. I know what not to order. A friend asks "What is kalamari ?" and I said it is squid. "No way". But when the waitress got there that's what she said. The menu was reopened for another look.

Gross, icky and eewww are in the eye of the beholder. The olman won't eat shrimp, something I like to have on occasion, but he eats kippers, which are just about the same as anchovies. Yuck, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

Then of course I saw a documentary a long time ago showing some tribe in bumfuckt somewhere eating bugs, and they had to be cooked in corn husks to remove their microspines, like hair, which basically kills their predators by tearing up their insides. What brainiac figured that out ?

What I don't understand is how eel can be grosser than grasshopper. Of course I would probably prefer it deepfried if I had any inkling of wanting to eat it. Raw shrimp turns me off, even though alot of people like it that way. I don't know if I could bring myself to eat sushi.

And the irony of it is that some of the grossest things you could ever eat are probably the most healthy things in the world for you. Eels come from the ocean, so their bodies live literally bathed in salt water. And that is no regular table salt. The mineral content is probably fantastic. But it is gross.

I'm hoping I am not hijacking here, but the way we see food is shaped by what ? You might not want to eat a plateful of grasshoppers, but there is no problem with a chink of meat cut off of a cow, a chicken or many other animals. I know a guy, in his twenties, and I have known him almost all his life. He did well, turned out from college as an executive at a meat processing plant. But they made him work every job in the shop before giving him any real authority. I agree with that practice in business, but that's not the point, the point is it was so gross he almost became a vegetarian. If you've seen and smelled one of those places you might think twice about the porterhouse steak on your plate.

Different cultures see things differently. We about Orientals "You stick pieces of wood in your mouth ?" and they about us "You stick those metal things in your mouth ?".

What if we found that cockroaches are the best food ? There would be some brimming business in certain areas of this country. If people would buy them.

In China they took to eating cats, and now they have a problem with rats. The logical solution is to then eat the rats. But apparently they drew a line as well.

It's all relative. In certain parts of the country they eay things we call the Orkin Man for. I don't know what I would do if I lived there. Probably starve.

ooooh man another thing to add to my  hard limit list.
I remember going to a buffet for dinner, my partner chose some "onion rings" he stated they tasted rubbery and I said, thats cos its Calamari, the look on his face made me stifle a guffaw, stifle it so hard  that I almost snorted rice thru my nose.
My dad being a londoner, loved jellied eels, winkles and snails, mussels, bur blech
Im not a great fish/seafood eater, altho I like shrimp, trout, mackeral, halibut and  cod, anything else makes me feel queasy.

In fact, a few drops of booze is the surest way to have us swallow pretty much anything  .

It's not that shocking to me, though  I wouldn't try it.  I'm Italian, and we'll scoop up just about anything that hops, jumps or crawls, throw olive oil on it and call it dinner.   I've tried a lot of things that would make people cringe, including octopus, squid, tongue, brains, and eel.

I must admit I've developed hang-ups over the years and will never again touch tongue, brains, tripe or liver, but I do love calamari prepared in any way shape or form.

Cept Antabuse(disulfiram). Antabuse does not reduce cravings, it merely makes a drinker feel sick if they consume alcohol. And boy does it make you sick.

Eel is no worse than snake, which of course, tastes just like Chicken - Eel is a bit fishier is all, like Gator tail.

Lobster and crab are technically Arachnids, but quite tasty, and insects are almost pure protein.

I love baby Octopus, there's a Chinese buffet here that has really good Octopus - a lot of places overcook Calamari, and it get's chewy like rubber - restraint is the word with any type of seafood. Oysters freak some people out, but I could eat them all day, raw, steamed or smoked.

Tongue is good if it's properly prepared, the Germans have some excellent recipes involving marination - looking at the taste buds is a bit disconcerting, same with brains. I've had tripe and other sweetmeats deepfried, "soulfood", and that is downright excellent - I haven't ever tried cooking them myself though.

I like to freak my son out when I eat Crayfish: you pinch the tail off and eat the meat, then crush the head/torso and suck out the juices - delicious. "Pinching tail and sucking head", as they say in Louisiana.

Lobsters and crabs are crustaceans, not arachnids, aren't they?
