Shewalksinbeauty -> Starting an organization (7/28/2008 9:26:03 AM)

 Hey,

I was thinking about starting an organization on a college campus. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me? Maybe point me in the right direction to jump start this thing. Thanks for all help in advance![:)]

Check with your university's Student Government -- things may have changed, but up until a few years ago, at least, sexually-related groups (as opposed to gender-identity-related groups like GLBT groups... very fine line) or groups that could be perceived to break local moral laws or promote injury to the membership are forbidden as student groups on campus.

Hopefully they've loosened up, but it's unlikely. Also, check with local regulations about what age activities like that can be participated in. While some things are open to 18+, other levels require that the participants be 21+.

BDSM group for Columbia University.  I would talk to them.

just remember if all else fails there is nothing wrong with making your own group that is not "affiliated" with the college itself.

In my experience of students they are way wired up, kool,  informed and  doing it anyways via the internet. [:D]

Most of the good advice has already been given.

I would say that getting cozy with the local LGBT group wouldn't be a bad idea. People are people, groups are groups, and there'e probably some good human experience to learn off of there. Havin a couple allies in your local LGBT community could be a nice support :)

(Disclaimer: This is strictly out of my own head... Never had experience running a group like this)

I would tread carefully here. At my school, such a group would be welcomed (by students at least), but at a school where reputation is a big bartering chip, I see students being wary of having their name attached to a kinky group.

Official school groups also need a faculty or staff advisor, which would mean you'd have to find a staff member willing to put their reputation on the line as well. If you're dead-set on being an official group, you'll need a faculty advisor, set meeting times, a charter, and a minimum amount of members to qualify (at least, that's how it was in my school!) I second the meeting up with the LGBT...lots of kinky individuals hide out there. I'd also suggest canvassing other likely clubs to garner interest. Talk to the student activities office in your school. Try and have a well-thought out and professional blurb about your group...you can't really go in front of the director of student activites and be like, "Um...I want a group for kinky people and stuff". It might help if you phrase it in a more politically correct and less sexually charged manner, like "A group for those interested in learning about alternative sexuality and sexual practices or something".

I suggest that it would be easier for you to form a little unofficial group, not affiliated with the school. You can avoid all the unnecessary paperwork and still have all the good stuff.

I suggest starting a PRIVATE organization and put flyers up on campus. In fact, I suggest starting a TNG (The Next Generation) chapter. It's a group for 18+ to 35 or 39, depending, focusing on BDSM and fetish. I'm sure if you google them and then contact some chapters, the leaders would be more than willing to share ideas.

I would usualy flame MasterFireMaam over the age thing. But. For a college campus I would set the age limit.

It's not my decision, it's a component of a TNG chapter. The are specifically geared toward that age range for a number of reasons. Many chapters, however, allow 'older' people still be involved in various ways. My chapter allows older people who are in a relatioship with a person still within the age range, or as an associate member with no voting rights. I'm not quite sure how the associate member thing works yet as far as being allowed at stuff. I'll find out in about a year and a half. ;-)
