Not necessarily. Some of us subs don't work that way, and some doms don't either. Speaking up is good, but punishment and reward in any substantial context are not required for me.

Again, not always. I don't expect mine to "assist in improving" my life. I want him to share it with me.
I'm not knocking that some feel the ways that are quoted above, just the idea that they may be universal.
I'm a firm believer that all discipline is self-discipline. Mine can't responsibly "make me" do anything. He can enhance the consequences of the choices I make. But the decisions are still mine, and I bear the cost or reward.
