The use them or loose them argument about on land oil leases is a non starter once you get past the sound bites.
Federal regulations already say the leases last 10 years (if I recall correctly) and after that they go back out for open bids. So it's already use them or loose them (assuming there is enough potential for anyone to actually want the lease you didn't use).

You are absolutely correct about the 10 year length on leases.

Something about an oil monopoly strangling us and just doing the same old same old, just doesn`t add up to me.

Though I loath T Boone Pickens,a Bush friend who bank-rolled the swift-boaters,for what he did to John Kerry,he`s actually correct that we need to get onto alternatives and can do it in ten years.

I`m getting really tired of the folks who say we can`t do it.WTF is that about?

We sent men into space and a man to the moon, strapped to former nazi designed rockets.
We produced an atom bomb where none existed before.

We can do this and with ease. And we can make fucking money with this shit. The future is renewables and we should be the country holding the patents and technology on them.

We should replace the exported jobs with new ones installing, making and exporting solar panels and wind power.

There`s every reason to do this.

Reduce pollution.

Reduce dependence.

Secure and develop a reserve supply of energy(non oil/NG).

Free up NG (natural gas) to run trains, buses, truck fleets, commercial vehicals.

This would inherently reduce demand and stablize the energy supply. The oil companies are perfactly ok with things as they are,..un-stable.

All these things are economic advantages ,but don`t let the fact that there`ll be cleaner air and less green house gases, get in the way of choosing the liberal, alternitive course.

Keep you`re eyes on the money.

The US automobile industry simply wont retool for alternative fuels in that short a timespan, they are losing money by and large right now (alot of their own fault, but partially union fault as well) And the foreign ones are going to be slow as well. But the retool to mostly hybrid cars they should be able to handle.

Wind Solar Geothermal etc, all great ideas and I too believe we can get the energy production industry off fossil fuels in 10 or so years. If it becomes a national bi partisan mindset. But the shift to propane natural gas for automobiles, I don't think the population can afford to replace their vehicles that quickly.

BTW anyone see the sory about where they Prius is going to be made in the US.
San Fran had a bid in but they got nixxed for hgh taxes and regulation costs.
1,000 good jobs just got moved to Mississippi.

I found it interesting that you cited this need in a thread you started by blasting the GOP for not releasing our current reserve supply...interesting indeed!
