Everyone keeps saying McCain got the facts wrong on the surge and when the success actually started.

Lest we forget he is being mentored by Presidents Bush and if you have not learned by now that with Bush when the facts do not agree with your point of view; you just change them.

What startles me about McCain is just how OLD he looks. On television he sometimes looks like he's 78 or something.

Definitely a wobbly dude: doesn't look like he could withstand anything much. And his voice his seriously shaky: that doesn't inspire confidence in his physical strength either. There's nothing wrong with getting old, it happens to the best of us, but there comes a time when it's time to retire... certainly, McCain looks as though he could afford to spend the rest of his puff leisurely mowing the lawn... and not much more.

Kittin I tend to have a like mind with you on most points, but your assertion that getting old happens to the best of us I can not agree with.Getting old happens to those of us lucky enough to live long enough...some of the best and brightest don't get that opportunity...their lives spent as coinage by some of the least of us as presently happening in Iraq

You're right, 'the best of us' is a silly expression. The worst of us get to live to a ripe old age too  .

Funny thing housesub is my grandmother,as she was laying in the hospice with most of what we would think of as quality of life behind her, used to admonish me not to grow old .Warning me of the horrors faced in ,the indignities visited on, those in declining health...I never got to ask,and I fear she wouldn't have had an answer anyway....but what is the alternative...dieing young?

Owner,

Are you suggesting that there is no media bias?  You have to be kidding me, or on some serious medication.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfogMFL7UJo  Oh, and let's not forget all of the Obama gaffes that have been edited out by certain news outlets... one example http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2008/05/30/cnn-removed-obamas-fallen-heroes-gaffe-soundbite

Let's get to the heart of your point.

Do you think the awakening would have been able to survive or even succeed without the surge?
Or are you more in the camp of Pelosi, and believe that the Iranians played a pivotal role in the lessening of violence and the increase in security?

P.S.  I can't wait for folks to actually fact check Obama's speech today....

Would the Awakening survive without the US there? Yes. It would. The insurgents are there because WE are there. We leave, and suddenly the population of Iraq turns against these assholes who were responsible for the long, drawn out occupation. That's what they started a good half a year before the surge was approved.

I really don't see why republicans keep wanting to change their own words. They siad when the Iraqis stand up, we'll stand down. (They have started to do so.)

They said that when the Iraq government asks us to leave, we will leave. (They have.)

What's next? Will Bush fall back on his original reason to be there, and say we're going to stay, until we find those stockpiles of WMD that threaten every US city?

If you think that Iran would not have taken full advantage of the vacuum that would have been created if we pulled out instead of the change in strategy, you are delusional.

If there was no surge or American support the "Awakening" groups would have been put under by the Iraqi government...  Try reading this column for a bit of info http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/71662/

"To date, the U.S. military has paid more than 17 million dollars to these fighters, whose groups it calls "Concerned Local Citizens" and "Awakening Forces." Each member receives around 300 dollars monthly. Many are former resistance fighters who used to attack occupation forces.
These new forces now have a strength of more than 76,000. According to the U.S. military, at least 82 percent are Sunni. It hopes to add another 10,000."

"The groups have been credited with chasing foreign fighters out of cities in al-Anbar province to the west of Baghdad, and also from parts of Baghdad. But members of these groups are often accused of extortion, corruption, and brutal tactics.
The Shia-led government has opposed creation of groups who might rival its own security forces, which comprise many members of former Shia militias."

Oh, and one more thing... you do understand the term sectarian violence?  The surge provided a buffer between the opposing sects, and allowed for them to pursue diplomatic solutions to their issues, as opposed to blowing up each others communities.

Uhm... talks are already underway.  Did you realize that most of the "surge" troops are scheduled to be pulled out by the end of this month?

The following is from a Washington Post article dated July 8, 2008.

"The current trend is to reach an agreement on a memorandum of understanding either for the departure of the forces or a memorandum of understanding to put a timetable on their withdrawal," Maliki said, according to a statement released by his office. "In all cases, the basis for any agreement will be respect for the full sovereignty of Iraq."

"Indeed, Sadiq al-Rikabi, a top political adviser to Maliki, said any timetable would be conditioned on the ability of Iraq's security forces to secure the country, something the government has long said. "In that case, American forces should return home," Rikabi said, adding that there were no discussions so far of specific dates for a U.S. withdrawal. "

Oh, come on, let's pop our heads out of our butts here.  The idea that the media is loving Obama is a fabrication.  These "loving" media are the folks who made the Rev. Wright thing a national scandal, have reported on Obama's less than savory Chicago connections, and have painted Michelle Obama as a neo-Black Panther.  They haven't given McCain a free ride, either, but if they were out to get him there's all kinds of stuff they could be dinging him about - the Keating thing hasn't come up, his associations with reactionary clergy have been mostly glossed over, as have Cindy McCain's drug problems.  The differences between the 2000 McCain and the 2008 McCain are significant, but have been largely ignored by the media.  I am not saying that they should be beating up on McCain about these things, just pointing out that if the media is as biased as right-wingers claim, these things would be getting a lot more play.

The "liberal media" is a non-existant boogey-man that conservatives trot out to fire up their base by making them feel like victims.  It doesn't exist.  It might have long ago, but it doesn't now and hasn't for some time.  The media doesn't rely on actual journalism any more, it relies on press releases.  Its role is not to inform the public but to write stories that will enhance revenue for the owners and investors.  There's really more right-wing media these days than there is left-wing media.  Supposedly liberal outlets like the Washington Post have a cadre of conservative columnists.  There is no left-wing equivalent of Fox News.

Right wingers, y'all aren't victims of media bias. It's time to get over your culture of victimhood and get real.

The media's only bias is money.

And the journalistic standard for getting as much money as possible is sensationalized info-tainment.  By definition, nobody gets rich saying 'Everything's fine, nothing to report here folks, old status quo's humming along...'

For a while, that sensationalized approach expressed itself in ranting against the establishment, against the status quo, and heaping attention on law breakers, convention discarders, anti-heros, and ridiculing mom and pop squares.... hence the perception of a liberal bias.

The pendulum has swung to where several people have realized that they can get rich by demonizing the demonizers, thus the popularityof 'right wing bias' shows.

All any of it is  is hype for money.

Very true.

If Obama was an old man mumbling and fumbling about the surge with a backdrop of cheese,no one would listen to him either.

The media(parts of it) has made their two pounds of flesh trying to make Mr. Obama into a monster, aswell.

Most of the links you provided were about people's opinions concerning media bias.  The UCLA study that you linked to defines the middle line using Congress as it's yardstick.  The other studies that claim there's media bias do the same.  I think that's a fatal flaw.  Both the Republican and Democratic parties are way further to the right than they were 30 years ago, even 20 years ago.  There are a lot of centrists and conservatives in Congress, relatively few liberals, so the results they've come up with are necessarily skewed to the right.

Just found this - it appears that others are unconvinced about the validity of the study you linked to.

"The study "A Measure of Media Bias" (pdf) by political scientist Timothy J. Groseclose of UCLA and economist Jeffrey D. Milyo of the University of Missouri-Columbia, purports to rank news organisations in terms of identifying with liberal or conservative values relative to each other. They used the ADA scores as a quantitative proxy for political leanings of the referential organizations. Thus their definition of "liberal" includes the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization with strong ties to the Defense Department. According to Media Matters for America, “the study employed a measure of "bias" so problematic that its findings are next to useless”. (Media Matters for America - Former fellows at conservative think tanks issued flawed UCLA-led study on media's "liberal bias 21/12/05) "

If you are going to use media matters as an example of unbiased reporting... I suggest you rethink that one. http://www.nypost.com/seven/10072007/postopinion/opedcolumnists/bum_rush.htm

quote:

Nearly every day, I get e-mail spam from this alleged “media watchdog" group. It's slightly less formal than the usual son of a Nigerian oil minister with erectile dysfunction and a great stock tip giving me a head's-up about a problem with my eBay account. This spam comes from some earnest p.r. flack letting me know that I might be interested in the latest Very Serious Finding by Media Matters for America. When you actually check out the item, it's usually very stupid or silly or, sometimes, slanderous. For example, on Sept. 25, Media Matters sent out a note announcing “Fox News panelist Mort Kondracke recently made several racist comments regarding the Jena 6.

Here are some examples of racism on Fox News." What were the racist comments? Simply this: Kondracke said in reference to the racial turmoil then brewing in Louisiana, “It looks as though the people of Jena can solve this on their own." It's a wonder Kondracke even bothered to take his Klan hood off while on camera.

If you would prefer, you could always just break it down by candidates... just take a look at the compiled numbers over at the PEJ (www.journalism.org)

Although, if you think I am coming at this from a certain perspective.... One that even people like Susan Estrich admits.
