Hey we have lots of coal, we could always go back to steamships.  It's a neat idea, but I don't see it being anymore than a novelty.

Gasoline dropped another $.60 per gallon on the wholesale market today... expect to see some of that over the next 30 days... Not to mention another day of drops in the price of a barrel of oil.

Wholesale/barrel prices having been dropping for several days, but they are still creeping up at the pumps... that alone pokes a big hole in the 'Its the SUVs stupid' explanation for high prices.

They are charging whatever people are willing to pay, regardless of supply, demand, alternatives, or anything else.

Prices have dropped over a quarter since the presidential moratorium was lifted.  Results may vary, but I paid less than $4 for a gallon of gas, and it felt good.

Pretty much. As we've all noticed, all it takes anymore is a headline to cause the prices to spike. I'm surprised that Dolly's hitting the eastern coast of TX hasn't cuased a .20 cent jump yet...

There was a slight spike when Dolly was announced to be headed that way, but it was reversed as soon as they realized it wasn't going to affect the refineries.

I would love that...here they've gone up 3 to 5 cents over the same period that barrel prices have dropped more than $10.

Sounds like some serious gouging goin on down that way... Oil is down over $20 in a week.  Then again the gas stations are always slow to lower the prices, but let a storm pop up someplace and they will raise the price without blinking, even though they won't be paying the price of raised wholesale gas prices for over a month.

Sailing merchant ships will come back.  The price of oil will in all likelehood not drop below $100/bbl.  Sailing vessels with new technology (electric winches, roller furling, newer sail materials) will reduce the number of hands necessary.  Sattilite tracking to help avoid storms, plus an auxelery diesel.  Non time sensitive cargoes...?  Cabins for passengers?  They will not completly replace the modern cargo freighters, but I think they could make money.

the station across the street from my house is charging $3.91 for reg. unl. and has been for over a week.

I'd love to see more cargo sent the 'old fashioned way'.  Of course, I love the tall ships...

I have this crazy whacked out idea again. How about we make products here in the US instead of importing everything except paper clips and toilet paper.

It'll never happen will it ?

Sailing ships are very cool. It would be nice to see them make a comeback.

What a novel idea! That won't happen as long as you keep shopping at Wal-mart and showing manufacturers that inexpensive is more important than our economy.
