Gosh- every day this summer my hands HURT if feels like arthritus- the neves go to fingers thru a small hole in the wrist.  with over use and genetics those nerves rub AGAINST the bone.  ouch.

In a way good timing since dogs shed 2x a year.....  no more dog hair- no more stepping in poop in the yard. :-)

When you get ready try a parrot- mine will outlive me.

{{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Your post brought tears to my eyes and goosebumps to my limbs.
I'm so sorry.
I must say, a 15 years old Lab is INCREDIBLE!  Most large dogs don't live to be that age. He was truly blessed!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm sorry for your loss. Having laid 4 dogs to rest so far, all of which meant a great deal to me, I understand completely.
To me the best thing you can do to honor his memory is to get another dog and give it a good home. I ran a black lab rescue for a while and there are so many wonderful dogs out there who need a good home and responsible person to love and care for them.

I'm not so much a Dog person as a Cat person for the most part, Annarus - and birds are sooooo completely NOT going to live in my home unless they're Raptors (Hawks, Falcons, Owls, Eagles - that sort of thing) that it's not even funny PAHunk.  The one and only time I've lived someplace where someone had a parrot - the bird and I detested each other - it was noisy, dirty, and mean.  While I enjoy watching Wild birds - even wild songbirds - and keep feeders out for wild songbirds, hummingbirds, etc - the only ones I can really tolerate in close proximity are those associated with Falconry.  And that requires special training and licencing in this state.  (And a lot more room to keep them in some sort of mews or aviary than I have available!)

I don't know at this point whether I'll replace Griz. He was sooo much Dad's Dog prior to the stroke.  My pair - the terrible twins (8month old lab mix pups from the same litter) Apollo and Athena moved a while back from my place out to the country to the home of some friends.  They needed a lot more roaming room than I could give them, and had found a way to get out of the yard which meant constant hassles with my neighbors.  When they weren't bitching at me directly (despite my efforts to make certain the pair couldn't get out, and chasing them down personally when they Did manage) - they were calling the local Animal Control to bitch and whine.  For the sake of Peace they were given to my friends whose nearest neighbor is 2 miles away.  I think for the time being, I'm going to wait on considering a new furbearing critter, and just concentrate on converting my 100 gal aquarium to saltwater from freshwater.  It's something I've been considering for a while, because I've been wanting to try and grow a mini coral reef.
