Just out of curousity.. and this is (I swear!) not to offend anyone.
I know it is PC to refer to someone as an African American if they are of a certain race. My question is, is the term universal? Someone from Britian for instance... isnt an African American... they arent american at all. Is there amore universal term?

Just a random thought that passed while I was browsing on the site...

I think in Britain they say 'black', but I could be wrong.

In South America, they call people based on physical characters without any problem.

When my girlfriend got a tan, my Peruvian friends called her Negrita. One of my students was China cause she was of Asian ancestry. They don't hesitate to call you Gordita (fatty) or Flacita (skinny)... It's all very affectionate and noone takes offense.

After traveling a bit, I think all the "-ism" crap in the USA is just drama that keeps getting perpetuated. On both sides. Get over it already.

I know it's more than you wanted... but hey... that's me the keeper of minutia..And you know what? It isn't always prejudice... in fact often it's not.

I'm not real big on PC terms, so I really don't have an answer for you. As long as you don't try to offend people, you should be fine.

In Britain there is a radio station, 1extra, which is advertised acros the BBC as the station for black music.

So yes, black it is here.

i've heard that in the US you can't order a 'black' coffee, it should be an order for a coffee with no milk! because it can cause offense!
is this true?

In Australia, the black population are either Khoori (used to be Aboriginals) or a growing number of black Africans coming from just about every country on that continent or Islanders (generally but not exclusivly South Pacific Islands) - and they can have their own sub-sets. In New Zealand the natives are Maori. ( If you've ever seen New Zealand play rugby (and maybe other sports) the Haka is a Maori War Dance performed at the beginning of the game that the entire population is justifiably proud. ) Then there's the Torres Strait Islanders ... and so it goes.

A person's cultural / religious /ethnic differences do cause divisions, however i think they are more acute in the USA then anywhere else that i know of ... but then the slavery history and the proportion of African Americans to the rest of the population is significant.

I had a Koori house mate for awhile and when her family got together for anything, she'd call it a black-out!

Don't know where you heard the story but people order black coffee and no one seems to be upset about
it here in Pennsylvania. Only place I could imagine it being a problem might be the upper west side of Manhattan
or one of those super liberal drama queen areas of Beverly Hills.

I think it's true that for all the talk about PC terms, the US is a very rude place. I'm sure in any ole restaraunt there would be plenty of people ordering thier coffee black spacificly because it's offensive.

i don't like the pc term, African American simply because it states (if taken literally) i'm from Africa which is not entirely true.

i refer myself as American or the universal term, Black.

Hello All,

I remember telling my family that I was living with a girl from South Africa and people just ASSUMED she was black. She wasn't. She is a white, pale as can be, red head... but I had a similar question after meeting her. If she became a US citizen, she would (realistically) be an African American. I rather liked the irony of that.

You know, in Philly things were pretty ugly. It's one of the reasons why I've chosen not to go back there. Sooooooo much was "racial" when it wasn't. Everyone on guard and afraid to offend... people being offended at the littlest thing. Oh please... here's a lil tidbit one of my (Philly) friends told me about. It illustrates how ridiculous things can get. It's set in Texas, but could be Philly, NY, Atlanta, heck all over the USA.... Interesting thread DV

Wow, I don't think of this country as rude at all. In fact, I think we're rather friendly!

And just exactly HOW is it offensive to order black coffee? Who exactly are you offending? The coffee?

If a black person orders White Chocolate, should white people be offended?

I agree with sambamanslilgirl here, I am an American, or the universal term, Black American or
you can even call me a Brown American.
I have friends and family that are so fair, they turn red in the sun instead of getting a tan, and they call themselves BLACK.
I have one family member, whose mother is so fair she is able to pass for White and she calls herself a Black American.

There will always be people who find offense no matter what term is used. When I was living in Italy I was called Americana, easy enough to understand. However, some people would use it simply as a description and others would say it as if it was something disgusting. I preferred bella donna, pretty woman, though if it was said during a business meeting with a leer it was still inappropriate.

Frankly, I come out and ask people what they want to be called. I have a black Master. He prefers the term black to African American. My stepmother is the same way. When she tells me about a person her first decsriptor is always their skin color. I tend to use a personality trait first when describing someone.

PC is a Fucking Joke.

Racism is the problem, someone who isn't being insulting calling someone Black because they have dark skin and that is what we have called them since Negro fell out of fashion to me is NOT recism.

I know this will sound cliche but of the NUMEROUS Black, Mexican, and Asian friends I have had over the years MOST don't care. It's the one who want to make others feel awkward around them that make a stink about it.

Just because I say BLACK does not make me a Racist it just means I may not be a PC as people want me to be.

I am FAT, I am not Plump or Hefty or Husky or overweight I AM FAT, I know it. I may not want it pointed out for the world to discuss and I really don't need everyone pointing it out to me every chance they get, but the fact of the matter is that YES I am FAT and no one should be required to spare my feelings just because calling me what I am might hurt a little.

Racism is about HATING for no other reason than Race, calling someone Black is not a Hate Crime.

God I hate this PC bullshit.

in manhattan you order coffee either black or light . if you want sugar you add sweet. as in light and sweet or black and sweet.
here in a small town some people got up in arms because a softball kids team was named the porkchops. supposedly this is a derogatory term for puerto ricans. i've lived in PR and the puerto rican neightborhoods in NY . if this was a derogatory term i would have known. its not. but now Master calls me porkchop. and i'm not insulted.
three times in the past year i've ordered southern style chicken sandwiches . i dont order anything for breakfast so i know it wasnt my mistake. 2 different macdonalds served me breakfast burritos. i never had a burrito. this never happens when i use the drivethru. should i be offended? IDK. mostly i laugh at the assumptions of some people.
i guess people can be offended over anything . and others theres nothing that offends them because they know exactly who they are.
if someone gets offended and no insult was intended a quick apologie for the misunderstanding should be all thats needed.
my 3 yo granddaughter dropped a cracker one day and as my daughters white friend was coming though the door the kid yelled "stupid cracker!".
this gave the young lady a shock but she got over it and we still joke about it.

Wrong about Manhattanites, ordering black coffee is not a problem there. I don't know of anywhere that you shouldn't use that term. Although there's a Duncan Donuts north of Poughkeepsie where they do put cream in if you order it black, or no cream. But I think it's just the clerk there is on autopilot.
