Without getting into who I think is an "expert" on this or that, I'm wondering if there are other people out there who have used this site as a source of information on certain skill sets?  Are there times that you find yourself contacting other folks about specific types of play that you might want to learn more about?  Do you have a certain criteria that you use to determine whether or not you think a person is knowledgeable about something you might also be interested in?

Or, is everybody here just pixels on the screen, who you wouldn't consider taking advice/suggestions from?

Oh, i've certainly taken information from discussions and filed it away for later reference... i don't have any pressing need for any specific information as far as BDSM goes, so i've not yet had reason to contact anyone individually (although i have bugged a couple people for non-kink-related expertise). i've learned a lot from the internet over the years, since there are a lot of things i want to try, and not a lot of opportunities to see demonstrations in person.

As far as criteria go, that's a tricky one... i can't say it comes down to anything more than a gut feeling at the end of the day... probably some combination of how frequently someone posts regarding a particular subject, the level of detail they reach in the discussions, and, honestly, their ability to express concepts and techniques in an intelligent manner.

No they're not just pixels, a number I have got to know more personally and I genuinely like them as people. Some are welcome to visit any time they can! I have taken advice and given it (I like to be even-handed!). Some from Dominants, some from subs/slaves/switches. Some from males, some from females. A lot from the Northern Hemisphere and not enough from the South [;)]. And sometimes all I can do is commiserate and send hugs. And when I do that those hugs are genuine and I truly wish I could be there to deliver them in person. A hug is truly a gift to both the giver and the recipient!

There are some posters who annoy Me at times, I just skim over them and, every now and then they have a glimmer of insight. I don't block people from the boards, the only people I have blocked is a couple who sent particularly nauseating messages to My inbox! For all I know they probably don't still exist here but I'd rather keep them blocked just in case.

I'm very much Myself (or should that be M/myselves??) here on the boards and I presume others to be until they prove otherwise. The OP has certainly proved Herself to be genuine in My eyes.

There are several people that I have read on these boards that I consider to be 'experts'.  Elegant's information on leather working and care is invaluable.  IrishM's toy making advice is inspired.  I also have several others that I turn to for advice in the PM's side who do not post here.

My personal experience with CM seems to run in two distinct tracks:

1) Some fairly high quality information about the scene, techniques, and community....

2)The absolute rubbish of the political threads in the "off topic" catagory. (I'd mention another area here, but I'm trying to behave. ;)  )

Frankly, I'll be so happy when this election cycle is over with. Whoever wins, maybe things will finally start to be a little less... nasty.

I reached out to one mistress here whose profile I studied closely, went to her rl group's website and read her posts. She responded to me with incredible speed, warmth and graciousness.  I consider her an expert.
Also I attended a rl event announced by a CM mistress--she was very helpful in person, allowing me to study her toybox and ask questions.  She too I think is an expert.
I gave advice here to three--it was well-received.
But Expert is not always needed, sometimes to hear another point of view--to get some insight or input from another is enough.
If you read the boards with care, for a good length of time, there is always something to learn. I find that true about the world in general. There is often something new to learn, everywhere you look, if you are like me, a life-long, curious "learner".
