Being quite new to the D/s lifestyle, and having quite limited real time experience I count myself incredibly lucky to have been blessed with an incredibly vivid and fertile imagination.And one of the things that always amazes me is just how incredible an orgasm i can have alone in a darkened room with just me, my imagination and a couple of vibrators.
Imagination must be one of the most important assets of any sub. I can take myself into an incredible world of pleasure inside my mind, and i can stay there for hours and hours enjoying wave after wave of pleasure, and very often do. My question to others. Especially the Dom'mes among you is this. Is a vivid imagination as important to a Dom'me as it is to a sub? I am afraid that i don't believe in the myth of "sub space" But i do believe in the euphoria caused by an adrenalin rush and the endorphins released by the brain during sexual arousal. Who knows perhaps they are the same thing?
But whatever the cause i love it. So any thoughts??

1. A vivid imagination is more important in a Top than in a bottom. We're the ones who have to choreograph the play, after all. If a Top is steak and potatoes and a bottom is exotic cuisine, the bottom will get bored and top from the bottom.

2. Subspace is NOT a myth. It's simply when a bottom is given more sensation than he or she can handle, and lapses into a happy comalike state.

But I will grant that I cannot see it being achieved with self-stimulation.

Sometimes, that vivid and fertile imagination subs have can be a detriment to their sex life. If you come up with a fantasy life that so out paces what real life can offer, you're bound to be disappointed when real life encounters come your way. The key to having a good fantasy life, one that's mature enough not to get in the way, is remembering where the lines are.

You see this sort of thing all the time with new folks on here, and at the munches and play parties. They come in, expecting "Story of O" or the "Beauty Trilogy" and instead they get a bunch of chummy friends dressed in kinky wear, discussing the housing market while one or two couples play in the background. Or worse, they go home with someone, and are expecting an utterly mind-blowing experience (orgasms that remind you of the "star tunnel" in 2001) and then find out that first encounters in BDSM can be just as awkward and clumsy as those in the 'nilla world.

Fantasy is great. It helps you get off, and keeps the fires going during those dry periods... but it's the closeness, and intamacy of the real thing that is really the whole reason behind this, and sex in general.

I'm going to have to disagree with your assessments in regard to both imagination and fantasies. People possess those characteristics in varying degrees and it has nothing to do with their orientation as dominant or submissive. To be frank, I'm not sure either imagination or the ability to fantasize are required at all... though as bipolar mentioned, a dominant having a good imagination can help keep things fresh and interesting if he or she assumes responsibility for directing play.

LOL so again, what about a switch?

And the top is only the one who choregraphs everything if that's how the top chooses. There's no issue in working TOGETHER to create a great scene (gasp)

I think the more imagination you have and the more you inspire eachother towards fun, the better. There is no more or less based on orientation.

My imagination is always ticking away about different things. Including sex and kink, that's just part of it. I've done some pretty unexpected stuff because of it.

Sure, I love getting off using my imagination while masterbating. I've also have had to resort to it in the past while having sex with somebody that was more vanilla-like.

It even shows up in the middle of conversations talking about crazy shit to do. Making jokes and whatever else.

Actually, I don't do 3/4 of the things my mind schemes up. Still it's a well of inspiration.

We both have a very open an vivid imagination. It helps in all areas of life, actually, and is equally important to both of us. He does a lot of visualization/imagery with me, so if my imagination were lacking, such exercises would not be so effective.

You mentioned you have limited real time experience. Saying subspace is a myth from this perspective is like someone who has never had an orgasm saying cumming is a myth. Some people go there, some people don't. But it isn't logical to say just because you haven't experienced something means it doesn't exist.

And like DarkSteven said, it is rather unlikely to achieve it through masturbation.

There is a mental state I get into in several different ways. You can call it 'the groove' (sports), 'autopilot' (driving a car), or 'into the game' (video games). I am pretty sure that 'sub space' is the same thing. The descriptions are the same.

I think it is when you get so involved in one thing that your right brain gives up control of your body to the left side of the brain.

I have always fantacized a lot when i masturbate, but a lot of what i fantacize i would never pursue in reality.

I agree very much with the postings of DarkSteven and bipolarber.

Fantasies can get you off when playing solo or even lend some ideas when talking about what makes you get all hot and bothered or flips your switch in a scene. Communication is always key if you want to take your mental movies into real time, if that's possible. *winks*

I also agree with the very knowledgeable ownedgirlie that just because you have not personally experienced subspace, calling it a "myth" isn't going to get you very far with many people who have experienced it. If I say South America doesn't exist because I've never seen it with my own eyes, that makes me sound ignorant. Some people have been there and some people haven't. Negating it for those who have, isn't a good thing. Subspace isn't a place one typically takes oneself. I can't imagine getting there by orgasm alone, not even hours of it.
