Not sure about a BDSM room but I just painted the bedroom in my apartment black - walls, ceiling, paintwork, door. It functions not just as a bedroom, but also a small black box theatre, a photographic studio, and it could make a pretty effective dungeon. What's the most important consideration? Space - this is all you really need. The room itself is space, but you can then subdivide the room further into spaces, space for furniture, a space for equipment, and space for doing things. The thing is whatever you fix or put into position you commit yourself to, especially when it comes to furniture. I got rid of my double bed, I now sleep on a mattress. But the mattress goes up against a wall and there's more space. It's okay if you use a piece of furniture a lot, or centre your scenes on one specific piece of furniture, but if you like to have different scenes with different furniture can take up space which could be used for something else. Sure, my walls are black, but I also have sheets, old curtains, and these serve as backdrops, they can be hung from the ceiling, act as screens, you just need a few thumb tacks and a bit of imagination and you can turn a bare room into a space which helps to set a mood. Then you can pay particular attention to lighting - I have candles with candle sticks, lamps, lights and halogen spotlights (for photos). I have a wicker chest, wardrobe, a space for equipment, chairs, incense burners, and something which plays music. Scatter cushions and larger cushions for sitting on can be better than chairs for sitting on, as they're more portable. I'd say the biggest or most influential factor when designing your BDSM room or 'studio' is space and how you use that space. Bear in mind that clutter is not only distracting, but can also be quite dangerous, especially if someone trips or falls. Hope this helps..
