I wish they had also included South Beach in the study.  Personally i think it's the best of two worlds, eating lots of lean protein, low fat dairy and good carbs and good fats, and it's easy to follow for a lifetime.

The Atkins "diet" is a self induced form of malnutrition known as Ketosis.  This comes from the complete avoidance of carbohydrates.  This differs from low carb diets which allow for enoguh carbs to remain healthy, in general.

Decent Wikipedia  link, a shame you didn't actually read it.  The absolute nutritional requirement for carbohydrates in the Homo sapiens diet is, as far as researchers can determine, zero.  What, exactly, do you think Eskimos eat?  They ain't growing potatoes.

This said, vegetables and fruits contain valuable nutrients that do help people stay healthy, but so does wild game meat and fish in its natural state.  No one needs carbs to remain healthy, but it is easier to get a good spectrum of nutrients with carbohydrate containing foods.  Fortunately a great many of the nutritionally dense carbohydrate containing foods are green vegetables, which are not just recommended but required on Atkins.

Well duuh, that *is* a low carb diet.

Great post on the subject, as usual

Hi proud; Dr Agatston is a smart man, and right about most things
