DarkSteven -> Decent shaving blades/cartridges? (7/15/2008 6:30:19 AM)

Many, many years ago, there were razor blades.  And they worked.  They lasted for weeks.

Then Schick and Gillette came up with cartridges.  They worked just as well.  But over time, they deliberately let the cartridge blades go dull nice and fast, so they could sell replacements faster and make more money.

I'm getting tired of replacing dang expensive blades every week, or having a 24/7 five o'clock shadow.  Does anyone have shaving equipment thyat actually WORKS and doesn't dull right away?

Get a straight edge razor and a sharpening strop and you`ll never need to buy new razors.

The strop is good for punishments as well.[;)]

But soon you`ll be back to disposables.

I read a story as a kid about a guy who invented a light bulb that never went out ,a car that didn`t break and a razor the never got dull.

He was assassinated,if I recall.

Im partial to a good old fashioned straight razor, with hot lather... Texas cutie in her silk nighty handling the shavin while ya read the paper...  Thats living! When that doesnt happen I have a cordless electric I use in the car while Im driving or I stop by a barber shop and have a Vietnameese chick do it for $3...

       Someone put a Gillete Fusion in my stocking for Christmas a couple years back.  Five blades, and spendy on the cartridges, but I wind up changing it out about once every couple of months.

       If you are one of those who gets five o'clock shadow by 10:00 am, or can grow a full beard in a weekend, good luck.

Yep, I do. A wonderful Gillette Superspeed from the 40s with an incredible sharp Feather blade.

I use an old, double-edged Gillette safety razor.  I found two of them in a box of things that belonged to my grandfather.  Both of them looked almost brand new.  I cleaned them up and have been using one ever since.  I hate those plastic, multi-blade razors.  They are too expensive, and they don't give as good a shave IMO.  No American company makes double-edged safety razors anymore, but you can still buy the blades.  The blades cost less than $5.00 for 10 of them, and one will usually last me 2 weeks.

You can look around on ebay and find people selling old Gillettes, or you can buy a reproduction online from here:

It's a great site, and they sell all sorts of shaving accessories.

this one is dandy.  the AAA battery lasts a long time.    it is pricey for a disposable- but does a decent job.  I HATE being scraggley.
especially when it is hot out.

im looking for the link for cheap blades for this

Go on ebay and purchase a Rolls Razor.  You can get them in great condition, with a strop and everything.
They look like a standard razor, but shave like a cut throat.  I use one, I know several people who do and they rock.

A five-o'clock shadow looks (and feels) sexy. I just got goosebumbly...see?

I use disposable Bic two-bladed razors. They're cheap, you can buy them anywhere, and they work well. Better than most expensive razors with replaceable blades in my opinion.

I like the Quatro Titanium. It is great!!!

sub4hire -> RE: Decent shaving blades/cartridges? (7/15/2008 10:58:28 AM)

Go do a search on ebay for an old razor.  Buy some blades..they still sell them.  Just finding a razor to go with is a little harder if you don't already have one.

As far as close shaves go we use the Gillette Mach 3.  Since I get razors free most of the time...seems 3 blades are better than 4 or 5..plus less expensive.

I've often though about making the switch to the straight razor, but for some reason I'm afraid of it. Back when I used to get hair cuts (I just shave my head now w/ an electric) my barber used to give me the straight razor treatment and I loved it.

Right now I'm using the Gilette Sensor 3. My beard grows back pretty quickly, and if I wanted to keep it super clean I'd need to shave every day, but right now I'm on an every other day schedule and my blades are lasting me about a month or so.

I think one of the overlooked secrets is what kind of shaving gel you use. I've found most success with Aveeno Shave Gel  http://www.aveeno.com/productDetail.do?prodid=3859, and most recently as a gift I got some shave gel from Bath & Body Works Men which I was originally skeptical about, but now I love it. http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2095353&cp=2073258.2445987&parentPage=family
