If you have the time it's always worth a while in Central Park at the boat pond watching Palemale and his mate. Someone usually has a telescopr or binoculars they'll let you peer through.

Regarding those who took exception to what I said about the subway... Please note that I was referring to TOURISTS not "real New Yorkers". New Yorkers have a certain attitude about them and know their way around and know where there is trouble etc... A tourist would not necessarily and the muggers / thugs DO target tourists more so than locals. I myself, when in NY, prefer cabs and eschew all public transit. I certainly would not have taken the person who accompanied me on the trip on a NY City subway at any time of day or night because she just screamed "rube lost in the big city"... Besides, who wants to ride a subway or stand in a bus station on vacation. To me smelling bum piss is not part of the tour. Its not just NY either, when I go from the strip to Freemont in Vegas I dont do it by bus.... As I said, cabbies are also a great local resource. I went the best cuban resteraunt and dance club in South Beach thanks to a cabbie. I wouldnt have gotten those places on mass transit....

Again, though, nobody is going to target you on a subway car full of people during the day.  Don't ride the thing in the middle of the night (take a cab then) and you are fine.  It's the best way to move uptown / downtown, and much faster than a cab once you do it a few times.

Well, you know what?  When I was a young 20yo commuting in Philly I was robbed in the crowded subway in broad daylight.  Didn't even know it until it was my stop.  Pissed me off.  Shortly thereafter I was pickpocketed in front of City Hall in Philly at noon, dead of lunchtime, standing with 30 people waiting to cross the street.  I realized what happened as I walked right next to him, and by the time i hit the next curb I was fuming.  I grabbed his arm and wouldn't let go until his buddy gave him my wallet back - he'd passed it along to him already.

The moral of the story ... yes, you live and you learn.  But you can definitely get pickpocketed in broad daylight.  (Or maybe the moral is stay outta Philly, go to NY.  lol)

I fucking hate Philly.  The place is a pit compared to what NYC is now.

Your experience there is not atypical, from what I've seen.  Overall, just don't be a moron - don't flash cash around, don't carry your wallet in a place it can be easily grabbed, etc.  Common sense shit you should be doing anyways, really.

Ahem.

Yes, it is a pit compared with NYC now.  My experience was ... oh, crap, now I feel old ... about 20 years ago.  Downtown was nicer then..

The point being ... those who didn't grow up in the city or have experience aren't going to know the common sense stuff you just said.  I grew up in the city and thought I was fairly smart .. until I learned I wasn't and then *really* got smart.  Did you ever watch the tourists at Times Square looking around at all the purty lights and all ... it's a goldmine for pickpockets.  lol

EXACTLY what I meant! Or walking around looking up at all the buildings, or spinning in circles, doing a happy dance in Central Park, saying Keeeeevers wayre in Neeeeeeeew Yeeeeeeeerrk Ceeeeeeteeeeeeeeeeee! Or walking up to strangers at random, sticking out your hand and saying "Haaaayee, Ahm Breeetkneelee and this heres Keeeevers weetaint from heeeeere..." (Kind of like a retarded child with Williams Syndrome! LMFAO)  Or the best of all, dancing down broadway drunk in an evening gown stumbling on high heels like a crippled foal, smiling like the canary that just fucked the cat, while singing Rhinestone Cowboy .... Yep, sometimes its easy to spot the tourists LOL...

Of course - at least she didnt ask a homeless guy if he could show her where the ATM was like my first wife did in Miami...  The outcome of that was predictable to everyone but her...

As a tourist who's been to NYC 4 times now, I'd say avoid the subway unless you like smelly, overcrowded pieces of shit. Just take a cab for the misc 4-6 bucks. I mean, you're on vacation right?

If you can get tix to a Yankees game, I'd go check it out. Granted, I wasn't that impressed with it the times I've been there (its no fenway *gasp*) but its a piece of baseball history none the less. As far as the neighborhood around the park, its a dump and not really worth going to IMO if you don't have tix to a game. Don't even get me started on that monstrousity that is Shea stadium!

SoHo is cool. Lots of cool stores and its where the younger crowd hangs out.

Chelsea is cool to, albiet a bit gay (not that there's anything wrong with that!), just FYI.

While I do agree that Times Square is a tourist trap and pretty lame, I still think its worth going to once to to check out. It is the place you see on TV and in the movies. While you're there, go to the living room bar at night inside the W hotel. Like I said, I've been to NYC on a few occsions, all of them accompanied by locals, and the Living Room bar is where you will no doubt find the best looking women. Granted, beers are 9 bucks and Bourbons on the rocks were like 14, the sheer quality of ass makes it worth it.

If I could do anything over again, it would be spending more time in Central Park. For some reason I'm astonsihed on a very big, nice, clean park in the middle of that city. If the weather is gonna be nice, bring / buy a big towel - blanket and just spend the day out there people watching.

EAT, EAT, EAT. There are about a gajillion great places to eat. Stuff your face every chance you can get. Pizza, steak, italian, chineese, etc. etc. etc.

Rent a car and drive up onto the sidewalk and plow as many Yankees fans as you can find.

As a native New Yorker i resent like hell a couple of the "helpful hints" you have been given.First the Subway is fine,i will assume you have common sense and will know where to put your wallet, and how not to look like a complete heyseed in the big city.Concerning Taxi drivers in New York, personally I would never give one of them the idea I didn't know where I was going, this is more dangerous than riding the subways....a NYC taxi driver who thinks he has a rube in his backseat will drive you around in circles and run up your meter(one poster mentioned $4-6,he hasn't been in a cab in years obviously...you couldn't go around the corner for that) Pay attention to the route make sure your not seeing the same landmarks twice
As far as places to see ,you have been given a months worth of things to do..The Cloisters are actually better in spring or fall, but I wouldn't miss them.Hogs and heffers,Coyote Ugly both worth a drink or two...though I wouldn't waste too much time in either on a short trip to New York...get a drink..maybe two move along there is a lot more to do in New York than watch tourists get drunk...enjoy The Apple it is one of the worlds finest City's and actually tourist friendly...use common sense

We stayed in a very reasonably priced and nice B&B in Greenwich which is close to Chelsea

http://www.abingdonguesthouse.com/rooms.shtml

I had some of the best French food ever at a restaurant in Chelsea too

I agree with slvemike4u, the subway is totally the way to go, much cheaper, and if I can get around on it fairly easily, anyone can.

Here are my suggestions

Subways are safe, at least till 2 AM.
See South Street Seaport.  Huge freakin sail boats.  Tango dancing on Sundays after 8.
See the Empire State building
See a Broadway show.
See Paddles
See the Met and the Museum of Natural History
Get a NICE dinner (Bobby Van's Steak house, Khyber Pass if you like Afganistan food)
