FatDomDaddy -> Stevia (7/13/2008 1:52:20 PM)

Any thoughts, criticisms or praise?   I've recently tied it and decided to give it a few weeks before I decide on using it to replace Splenda. Didn't like Stevia in coffee but found it made excellent ice tea. (I like mine southern style, sweet no lemon) Is Stevia the wave of the future? Coke-Cola seems to think so.

christine1 -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 2:19:59 PM)

i'm still using nutra sweet.  is stevia better than that?

Owner59 -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 2:34:09 PM)

I`m still on the cane...

Can`t quit that cane....though I`ve tried.

Lockit -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 2:34:29 PM)

I tried splenda and loved it, but soon after started having neurological issues.  I haven't heard of this Stevia.  I had to go to no sweetening and that was a drag!  But I do sugar now and just limit it.  I guess I need to google.  Anything that is like splenda or aspertine or whatever it is called or spelt... can with some people have serious neuro problems and some don't realize it is that weird something that happens to them.  They don't relate the two, but there have been studies done on it all, but I don't have the links on this computer.  Good luck with your trials of stevia and all!

DomKen -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 3:17:01 PM)

Note that stevia is the subject of pretty intense research right now. While a certain large soft drink company is counting on it being safe there are studies indicating that it has a mild mutagenic effect, IOW it may cause cancer or mutations in offspring. Further research is underway to establish whether it is safe or not. For the time being I'd stay away from it.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 3:27:05 PM)

I can't stand Splenda, or any other artificial sweetener.  I don't know what it is, but they leave this horrible aftertaste that seems to linger for quite a long time.  I just stick with plain ol' cane sugar.  I wish we had more soft drinks that used cane sugar rather than corn sweetener.  When I want something that has no sugar, I drink coffee or water.

I switched from Nutra Sweet to Splenda about 5- years ago because I thought it tasted much better. I haven't made up my mind about Stevia though yet and Splenda is easier to get.

ownedgirlie -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 4:52:05 PM)

Stevia had too bitter an aftertaste for my liking.

Splenda gave me digestive issues, such that I had to be poked and prodded (not in the fun way) by several doctors, including two colonoscopies.  A year and a half of intestinal problems, doctors, and medical bills.  I stopped Splenda and two weeks later my problems disappeared.

Nutrisweet causes me horrendous migraines, such that I was rushed in for an emergency CAT scan as the docs feared a stroke.  I quite Nutrisweet and my migraines went away.

I don't even bother with Sweet & Low.  At this point it's sugar (organic cane juice) or unsweetened for me.

Roselaure -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 6:43:55 PM)

I find Stevia to have a slighly licoricy flavor that I don't really care for.  NutraSweet gives me headaches.  I like Splenda and have had no adverse effects from it.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 8:04:20 PM)

I'm hooked on the cane...I can't comment further.

Termyn8or -> RE: Stevia (7/13/2008 10:00:47 PM)

A genuine legal addiction.

Look at this thread. You are hooked. Listen to yourselves.

I am going to shutup now because it is about like people who quit drinking talking to me, I know how that is.

Later.

Sugar is not such a problem per se. One table spoon has something like 15 calories and 4 carbs but the amounds they use in comericial drinks (if they actually use real sugar)  the amounts of  it and corn
syrup is

janigrey -> RE: Stevia (7/14/2008 11:00:15 AM)

I use Stevia and Splenda - with no problems.  I use Sweet and Low too....
The only one that causes problems is Nutrasweet- major headaches.

*Shrugs*

I haven't baked with Stevia - but I use it in beverages.

Its somewhat more natural than any other artificial sweetner according to wikipeida.

Stevia is a natural sweetener.  More sweet than sugar.  It comes concentrated, I believe in the past few years they came out with packets you could use just like splenda..etc.

I use stevia in ice tea...but nothing else.  Its more than a bit hard to figure out the right amount to add to cooking in general.  I'm sure in time they will come out with powdered stevia with fillers so you can use it just like baking splenda.

Yet, for now...its ice tea alone.  I love it.  It is safer than the other alternatives even with the new research going on.

everhope -> RE: Stevia (7/16/2008 9:25:45 PM)

i found a stevia plant in my local nursery. it is a pretty plant and two leaves in a large glass of iced tea is really delightful. that is all i know about stevia.

I think they know legally it will all hit the fan eventually if they don't find a decent substitute.
Stevia takes some getting use to but I avoid most artificial sweeteners.

thishereboi -> RE: Stevia (7/17/2008 5:01:21 AM)

I haven't tried this one, but I avoid artificial sweetners if at all possible.

Stevia is natural.  Not man made.

spankmedarlin -> RE: Stevia (7/17/2008 5:21:35 AM)

Try Agave - comes from the cactus plant. Natural, okay for diabetics. I get it in the health food section of Krogers or in Whole Foods.
I have an article about Splenda if anyone wants it - can mimic the signs of MS. Very bad stuff.
