impishlilhellcat -> Is your city/state a good place to live? (7/13/2008 11:31:26 AM)

So I'm newly graduated well not quite graduated, but the degree is mine I earned it and I stood in front of two committees and answered a slew of questions. Some well some not so well. Anyways I'm 26 I haven't traveled much at all I've lived in two states grew up in michigan and now oklahoma for graduate school. I figured a good approach to looking for a job was to find a place where I wanted to live. I thought I would ask everyone's opinions about the state or city that they reside and while yes I can do a whole lot of research on the internet about certain areas that interest me most of the time that doesn't tell the whole story. (I learned this from personal experience and moving to OK) soooooooooo What's great about where you live??

Salt Lake Valley, Utah
The good: Beautiful mountains, easy to get to good food
The Bad: Poor Wages, High cost of living
The Ugly: A lot of very judgmental people

Portland, OR...i enjoy living in this area for many reasons...the cost of living isn't really high...wages aren't necessarily very good either...not sure about the job market, because whenever i decide to find a job, i'm generally offered three, so my experience doesn't necessarily match others' experiences in that way...besides, right now i drive a semi all over the country...the weather is pretty temperate, not too cold in the winter, not too hot in the summer, the humidity is manageable & the area is gorgeous!!  there are mountains & forests & about 1.5 hours away is the ocean...there are rivers & lakes to swim & fish in...the people tend to be fairly mellow & outlets for kink abound...plus, NO SALES TAX!!!!

No sales tax??? sweet! Michigan doesn't tax most food items OK taxes everything! I did apply for a job in Oregon not too long ago I have family there they love it.

depending on your degree, Chicago is a good place however the job market at the moment has stalled a little unless you're a teacher, in the medical or police.

housing boom has slightly slacked off but there new condos/rentals happening. cost of living and crime is quite high depending where and which neighborhood you live.

there's diversity yet neighborhood racism/segregation still exists.

unless you like humid summer and brutal winters, you'll love the weather

yet there are some good points about the city - public transportation (some routes run 24/7), festivals, museums and arts, music scene, shopping, schools, parks, great lakefront and river views, bike paths etc etc

Beachwood Ohio is a east side Suburb in Cleveland Ohio
Beachwood is a great place to live if you have money and can aford it other wise i would say if you cant aforst a more upscale comunity dont come to the Cleveland area

other parts of Ohio are nice

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Is your city/state a good place to live? (7/13/2008 11:55:17 AM)

I've been actively checking out the chicago area. It's so close to my family two hours away a little less by train. I have a degree in chemistry and there seem to be plenty of jobs available. I was just weighing the cost of living, where to look for apartments if it's possible to have a place where I can take my dogs things of that nature. But I have always like Chicago.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Is your city/state a good place to live? (7/13/2008 11:58:23 AM)

we have parks and beaches reserved for dogs.

good places to live - Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, Near South, River North, Museum campus area, medical district. Oak Park and Forest Park (though outside the city) are also good places.

good luck!

I applied for a job around DuPage they said it was 30 miles west of chicago do you know much about that area? Just generally what type of area it is and if they have a reliable public transportation?

So I'm form Michigan right well not many apartments like you keep dogs, but here in OK every apartment your allowed to have dogs and they have washers and dryers in them it was a shock for me and then I got to talking to friends and a lot of hotels, resturants, and stores let you bring your dogs.

Akron is ok. Are you going to persue Phd? University of Akron would be a good place for it...

windchymes -> RE: Is your city/state a good place to live? (7/13/2008 2:03:37 PM)

While the University of Akron is a really good school, the city itself is probably one of the worst places I could think of to live, lol.  But there are a lot of nice areas surrounding it.

I spent the last 11 years in southern New Jersey.  The state as a whole gets a pretty bad rap, unfairly.  High cost of living, but nice beaches and shore towns, state parks and forests nearby, only an hour or two from NYC and Philly.  I miss it.  The northeast section of the state is the worst, highest cost of living and terrible traffic problems.  I'd stay away from there.  On the whole, the salaries there are low compared to the cost of living.  That's why I moved, see next paragraph.....

I relocated to the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area last year and basically hate it.  Cost of living about on a par with NJ, but the salaries are a lot higher to compensate.  The traffic is absolutely hideous.  A lot of multicultural diversity.  There are a lot of jobs available in the area.  Apartment rentals are pretty high, but they are mostly very pet-friendly here.  Real estate prices have dropped drastically from even a year ago and are expected to drop even lower by the end of this year, so it's actually a good time to buy here.  Builders are offering all kinds of $0 down/$0 closing financing just to move properties.

Just my 2 cents.

Well I'm not looking at schools because well I have the degree already I'm just looking for places to live at this point mostly finding a job shouldn't be too hard.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Is your city/state a good place to live? (7/13/2008 2:55:59 PM)

Hello cat,
Well, hmmmm what an interesting question... I've lived all over the world and can tell you this much.  Just because I find a place good, doesn't mean others will.  I went to Nashville because my aunt is there, I love country music, and it's near my family.  Also, the people are really friendly... but they also proselytyze (sp) all the time.  I went to the bank to open an account, and the woman asked me if I'd found a church yet.  Everywhere I got that - the grocery store, the restaurants... EVERYWHERE... They were real friendly about it, but when i said I'm not a Christian, thank you very much, they said, "would you like to be?"  le sigh....

I live in a smaller city in Oregon now.  I like international things, and there are lots of international people here.  There's a farmer's market and it's pretty quiet.  I like that.  I have lived in the big city (Philadelphia) and international places.  What's really important is what you want.  You might want to narrow down your question and look at the reports on the best cities and what not to live in (Kiplinger, Money mag, etc).  Where do you thrive?  In a small town or a big city?  In a slower paced life or a fast paced?  Do you travel?  If so, be near a good airport.  Do you want to be around families or singles?  Do you want a more diverse place or Wonder White Bread?

Just so you know though, I too had this question a few months ago.  Can't find the thread, sorry.... so I understand your dilemma.

Now i always give the same advice to folks who just graduated... defer student loan payment and go teach English in an exotic place for a year, six months, ten years... whatever.  You'll be glad you did.

peace and passion,
sunshine

DuPage County is a very good area with a couple burbs in which are middle to upper-middle class bracket. as far as public transportation goes - there's Pace and Metra however both run on special rush hour schedules during the weekdays only (depending which burb you decide to live in). otherwise you'll need a car to drive to the mall, grocery, etc.
