SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Las Vegas man who devised a calendar that features shirtless Mormon missionaries is facing a disciplinary hearing and possible excommunication because of the project. A lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Chad Hardy was summoned by letter to a Sunday meeting with a council of elders to discuss his "conduct unbecoming a member of the church."A takeoff on calendars of firefighters and returned U.S. servicemen, Hardy's project debuted with a 2008 calendar featuring 12 returned church missionaries in mostly modest poses, minus their trademark white shirts, ties and black plastic name badges. It has sold nearly 10,000 copies. "You see more in a JCPenney catalog," said Hardy, 31, who once worked for Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller and now has his own entertainment company. "I just feel like my right to free speech is being violated."

I remember seeing pics of that calendar when it came out - TMZ had them, I think.   I was also shocked to see this because Mormons always seemed so conservative to me.

Unfortunately, what Hardy is forgetting is that the church isn't governed by the Constitution and he doesn't have any rights to free speech within the church.  The church can do whatever they like to a member, if that member violates their rules.  any. "I just feel like my right to free speech is being violated."

hisannabelle -> RE: mormon shirtless calendar maker faces discipline (7/11/2008 7:08:32 PM)

that's what was odd to me - in the article he goes on about how he's not been a practicing member for like six years, but yet he somehow has the right -not- to be excommunicated.

i've always found mormons fairly easy-going (from attending the church here and studying with missionaries and friends), but nevertheless i have to say i don't understand how he could see the church coming to any other conclusion.

That's religion's stock and trade.  Supression of thoughts, ideas, facts, science and free speech.  Besides being professional liars and scam artists that is.

Termyn8or -> RE: mormon shirtless calendar maker faces discipline (7/11/2008 8:02:54 PM)

Needing expressed it, whether it was desired or not. I will put it into words.

I don't lie because that is letting the person lied to assume control. I would guess thatn 80 of then people in this country do not know that, and I know a couple of them who have been told, but they can't grasp the concept.

This came clear to me possibly as long as forty years ago, when I totally rejected Christianity. When I was seven years old I sinned ? Get the fuck away from me. I am going tro hell ? Even at that age I decided that I would rather be with my friends and family, and they were aghast. Fukum.

And the Mormons, I know a few. Roll you Mom up in the carpet and keep cashing her SS checks for six months. Yes I know thos people. They azre about as devout as our politicians. Actually I haved no problem with that, as long and they stay away from me and what is mine. Do what you wanna do, go where you wanna do.

If you don't interfere with my life I could not care less what you do.

They should have sent an army of hair stylists in as the advance force LMFAO.When I get me six wives under 20 they are gonna look like Heffners Bunnies not Little House On The Prarie LMFAO

Perhaps, though I see it more moderately than you do.  Irregardless, it makes his ranting about his free speech being violated nonsensical.  He joined a group.  He violated their code of ethics.  He's out.  Easy-peasy.  No law suits on this baby.

Truly?  I expressed all of that?  Damn.... I'm good. [;)]

Thadius -> RE: mormon shirtless calendar maker faces discipline (7/11/2008 8:49:57 PM)

I would be willing to pay for a shirtless female mormon calander, assuming they met legal requirements.

Heck, if being excommunicated by a church that one hasn't actively participated in for over 6 years, is the worst thing that happens to somebody, I would say they have it pretty damn good.

True this.  But if he had three brain cells, he should have realized this walking in.  Hence my comment on religion.

Vendaval -> RE: mormon shirtless calendar maker faces discipline (7/11/2008 9:12:10 PM)

Maybe this is a covert action to bring more young women in the breeding stock of the church?

Excommunication is always preferable to being burned at the stake or tortured in a dank dungeon or even strapped to a chair and drowned.

Makes one wonder... would the religious right bring back the Inquisition if the opportunity arose?

lol.. It might have worked.  Some of the men were quite good looking, surprisingly so - because they were very bold about their sexuality, working it.  In case anyone's interested ... http://photos.tmz.com/galleries/mormon_hunks_2009

I think some folks would around here would beg for that type of treatment... just sayin.

To answer you question though, I doubt it.  Hell who knows really, if my aunt had nuts would she be my uncle?

Actualy Christine - they are a flavor of mormons. FLDS "Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints" vs Latter Day Saints. Southern Baptist, Alliance Baptist, Reformed Baptist all = Baptist. [:D] Weve got Baptists here who serve fried chicken and weve got some who pass around live serpents. They are all "Baptists"...

LadyRainfire -> RE: mormon shirtless calendar maker faces discipline (7/12/2008 5:31:44 AM)

Eh, as an ex-mo myself (I told the church to fuck off in not so nice terms a few years back) I can say from personal experience that the main church, the LDS church, would take massive exception to calling the FLDS as part of their church. Mucho animosity there. They prefer the term "Saints" over "Mormons". And the FLDS would have problems if you say they're related to the LDS church because they believe that the modern LDS church is apostate and fallen away from true beliefs for denying polygamy, among other things. I've got friends who have come out from polygamist groups and know extensively what goes on there. [&:]

As for the calendar, it violates church standards and if the man who produced it is a member of the church, he should expect  a disciplinary hearing.  If he's not active, then maybe he needs to re-evaluate why the heck he's still in the church. The church has a strict dress code for all members and this calendar has broken them. Probably all the men who appeared are getting called on the carpet. We're only hearing the one man whining....

As another former member, I can attest to what you are saying.  The young men are all certainly really hot looking but..... they are recently returned missionaries and they knew good and well that what they were doing went against Church standards.  I know that their bishops were just cringing when they got the call to talk to the youngsters!!!
