When I was in I was serving my family, my nation, and its ideals. Politician is not a bad word as many seem to incinuate...They are my elected representatives that reflect the thinking of the majority of the nation at the time of the election. This may not be true in other parts of the world but it is in the US.

This is not to say the thinking is wrong or will change.

Major  (Butch).

I am forced to agree, and vehemently disagree, as you know.

As a couple of boots on this earth, that is one thing.

As a what the fuck does it change throughout our antecedents lifetime, when all  the hornblowing is done.....what's the fuckin' use?

They serve the political arm.

Don't you mean the political armPIT? [;)]

Go to the US Army web site and take a look at the oath you take when you swear in.
The US Army serves everyone their officers and President call them to do.
It is a great honor.

they are an extension of politics by other means.

Sun Tzu (he has put it the best)

they are self-serving; ultimately.

VonClausewitz tells us "War is a continuation of politics by other means."    DomAviator tells us the letter of the law as to who the US military serves, whether he or she is worthy of the title is another arguement altogether.

But in the metphysical sense, US military serves the American Way of Life.  That is, to preseve the way of life as guaranteed by our Bill of Rights, and keeping us speaking *mostly* English and not German or Japanese or even Russian .

Unfortunately, the way the modern corrupt political system uses it in real life is for it to serve themselves and their fat cat buddies at the cost of innocent lives, namely the lives of the service-men and women who aren't paid nearly enough, never get enough training, never get the proper support and many times don't have the proper tools.

Police (also known as Jackboot Thugs or Kommissars) on the other hand, serve primarily themselves and the equally corrupt local and state officals.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: armed services serve who exactly? (7/11/2008 9:17:23 PM)

The function of the military is to make sure there isn't any money for health care, secondary education, transportation, or other uses which will benefit all of society rather than just arms makers and rich republicans.

Who or what do the armed services serve?

That is going to depend entirely on which "armed services" we are talking about.  Anybody who gets a paycheck to carry a gun?  As a broad global defintion, militaries serve whatever power structure feeds them.

Now in the United States military, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, bearing my true faith and allegiance to it.  The rest of it was just terms and conditions.

...a couple of posters have made this point, at least in the US context. Makes me wonder, are there any veterans on these fora who have served in non-US military services? What do they think?

The government, the establishment and the rich.

Termyn8or -> RE: armed services serve who exactly? (7/12/2008 7:11:55 AM)

Smedley Butler had the answer. Easy to look up on Google or wiki.

A quite decorated soldier who, in later life realized what he had done.

So so true and to prevent democracy.

If ever there was a real democratic vote and people voted in their own true interests, the army would be on the street within hours to protect the wealth and power of the national establishment.

The constitution was and is a conservative document to protect the opulent rich from the poor majority. It always amuses me why it is treated as a sacred document by ordinary Americans when its sole purpose was to consolidate the power of the wealthy, which it has done.

Why is that?

Their immediate boss is the President - and they serve at his will.  Article 2 of the US Consititution appoints the president Commander In Chief

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States;

In clause 5 of the same article he is responsible for commissioning officers of the armed forces

shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

The oath a military officer swears says : I, (state your full name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

An Enlisted Man says: I,____________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. I swear (or affirm) that I am fully aware and fully understand the conditions under which I am enlisting

Thus the US Military works for the PRESIDENT not the individual taxpayer as was mistakenly stated in the other thread. The president "hires" (appoints) the officers, the enlisted are sworn in by one of those appointed officers and are sworn to obey the orders of the President and the officers appointed over them (Officers commissioned by the president as stated previously).

So continuing form the other thread the "Im a taxpayer you work for me" shit doesnt fly... Nowhere does it say we work for you, or even in your interests. America is NOT a democracy it is a republic and Joe Citizen gets one day a year to decide things in Govt otherwise sit back and enjoy the ride while those you elected drive the train... Joe Taxpayer has jack shit to say about anything except on election day...  Like whats happening , reelect the incumbents if you dont make your displeasure known by voting them out. However, the military is under the control of the elected not the citizens.

D.A. that's all true of course but isn't the *purpose* of the military to "stem invaisions" like what's going on along our border with Mexico?

That's certainly one theory...and a pretty fantastic one too.

Care to name any society, anywhere, anytime, in which the wealthy didn't strive to do exactly that by any means neccessary, no matter how many pieces of paper were written against it?

I mean as a directly linear profiteer from the Opium Wars and John Hawkins' slave trade and all that, you may have some valuable insight on such things.

Possibly because it tells the government what it may not do, unlike your apparent attitude that government should do absolutely everything.  What part of "power corrupts" is it that you don't get?  It's funny how often we talk about how many people have been killed by Christianity vs. Islam, yet never mention how many have been slaughtered by the ideology you hold so dear.

Termyn8or -> RE: armed services serve who exactly? (7/12/2008 10:23:50 PM)

Putting away the ten foot pole.

I will say this,  the Constitution need to be read to be understood.

That is all.
