CHICAGO - The American Medical Association on Thursday issued a formal apology for more than a century of discriminatory policies that excluded blacks from participating in a group long considered the voice of U.S. doctors.

Inability to join the AMA kept many African-American MDs from asuuming positions at AMA accredited hospitals.

Changing attitudes and prejudices does not occur overnight...consider that most of the ones that are handling the AMA applications went thru a schooling system that was still segregated, they were raised to believe blacks were inferior  so they grew up with the prejudices and their beliefs in place...change will occur faster when that generation  retires ,,, it is no different that the number of women in high power positions...it is still harder for women to achieve those ranks because and older generations of males is still calling the shots  and they grew up and were raised to  believe women are inferior believing a women place is in the home barefoot, pregnant and baking bread and tending to men and not being the decision makers in life...so certain changes will take generations  to become effective.   I travelled to Florida in 1979  and the drive from Boston to Florida made me very aware of the racism  that existed and came as quite a shock to me having grown up here in Canada even the business such as service stations and resterouants in the deeper south that hired afro -americans  choose ones with slave like demeanors which to me seemed so weird to see.  the afro americans  far north tended to be more hostile and defensive though I could understand why when I looked around you could see the oppression that existed for them..being that was just over 25 years ago at lot of shange had to take place for them to be accepted into medical schools and later into the AMA   Part of the growing pains but considering  what I had seen back in 79 and remembering images on TV  when the US finally decided to segerate schools  I see is a they have   come a long way  and I think that much change is actually quite impressive..but  feel it might take 25 more years for a  balance to exist  Mind you  I have not driven back down to Florida since . in some ways I do wonder if seen through my eyes again if the changes would be quite as huge... for some reason I still expect I would note a major racial gap in the southern states
