OH THANK GOD! LOL You know this is twisted but funny... On the Boeing 777 the biggest problem that pilots have is the in flight entertainment system. That thing iks a NIGHTMARE and accounts for about 1/2 hour of preflight time and a huge # of maintenence squawks... Most of them have been repeatedly kicked and beaten by pilots...

...there'll be riots on the transatlantic run.........specially if i'm on the plane. Inflight movies and nicotine gum are about the only things that make that long in the air bearable.

Phil .. it's just domestic flights (for now)

DA.. I was wondering, at first, what one had to do with the other.. then realized that if the airlines werent paying for the movies they wouldnt have to adjust as much for fuel....

Yeah the movies cost out the ass... They arent like home DVD rentals, nor are they DVD's picked up at Walmart. The airlines have to buy the screening rights much like the theatres do because its not private home exhibition....

Airline costs can be mind boggling... I forget the exact # and the exact carrier but when I was working on my MBA we studied how reducing the peanut packages by like 3 nuts each saved something like $21,000,000 a year LOL

i had no idea the movies cost anything.  interesting...the last flight i was on, the flight attendants were giving out 3 and 4 packs of peanuts to those that wanted them....if they were really trying to cut costs, why would they be giving out extra peanuts?  if peanuts are a cost issue, why arent' they being more careful?

I've actually never watched an in-flight movie.  I read, sleep, or write on my laptop.

So I'm not really contributing to your OP, Greedy, lol, other than to say I won't miss it.

On most carriers they dont cost the passengers anything however the airline is paying as much as $5 per seat for the rights to show them same as a movie theatre does.. (A movie theatre makes most if not all of its money from the concessions stand!) A lot of people dont realize this but even the music on the radio isnt free - the stations buy a license from BMI/ASCAP and submit playlists and pay some miniscule amount that adds up to monster royalty checks.

The flight attendants handing out the "pilot pellets" is an act of defiance LOL There are a certain # allocated per flight and the ones that dont get handed out find their way to the pilots...  Everything that happens on a flight isnt necessarily per the Air Carriers Operating Handbook and Procedural Standards LOL

I usually alternate between reading and sleeping on flights and do not watch the films.  But this will be a big disappointment for some travelers.

As someone who flies on a regular basis, I am not surprised to hear this. They've cut out meals and most snacks on flights under 1000 miles and no in-flight entertainment on them. When I flew from Boise, Idaho to Buffalo, New York, the flight on Delta or United that offered entertainment or food for sale was the long haul one from Salt Lake City to Atlanta. All other flights had nothing. Since I ended up on a flight connecting through Minneappolis, it was a small soda pop and a cookie. Though I was allowed to bring onboard my coffee from a shop in the terminal. That's the only good thing now.

Flying. It's not what it used to be!

Okay, no inflight movies on domestic flights......

Alright, I have a solution to the entertainment problem, larger bathrooms on the planes to make it much easier to join the mile high club....

Air Canada now has individual monitors on the back of each seat, once the flight is in the air, you can chose from movies, tv shows, news and sports programmes, and you get headsets(really helps). On my recent flight( a week or so ago) I had a choice of 9 movies...I didnt look at the other choices  until my return, it was quite extensive. I started to watch cloverfield going down to Reagan, but duh me, the flight only takes an hour or so, so I missed half of it, but I imagine on a flight to the UK it would be most excellent to have that choice.

Contrary to popular misbelief - "The Mile High Club" actually requires that at least one of the persons involved be an on duty required flight crewmember. To be technical if two pieces of what we know as "self loading cargo" (passengers) get it on in flight that doesnt count any more than if they did it on the steps of denver city hall.
For it to be official you need to shag a required crewmember - pilot, flight engineer (on aircraft that still have them) or flight attendant  Yes, people think it counts for all - but to actually earn the wings (Which are pretty cool they have 4 feet arranged like the blades of a propeller.) one of the participants has to be an on duty crew member...  For any interested ladies, let me know Im an instructor and will be happy to schedule your checkride LOL

Edited to add: There are also several additional ranks in the mile high club. A "grand slam" is when you have boned at least one each of another pilot, a flight attendant, a passenger, and "other crew" (flight engineer or on air ambulance flight nurse or flight paramedic). An Ace has at least gotten it on in flight with least 5 different partners. A Centurion 100 partners.
