My sister just sent me this link.  PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) euthanized 97% of its shelter animals in 2006 and 90% in 2007.

"In 2000, when the Associated Press first noted PETA's Kervorkian-esque tendencies, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk complained that actually taking care of animals costs more than killing them."
From this article.

"Not counting the pets PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 90 percent of the animals it took in during the last five years."
Clicking on the chart on this link will take you to hand written logs by PETA officials, declaring the number of euthanized dogs, cats, and other companion animals.

I've never been a follower of PETA, but this surprised me and I figured I should share.

Penn and Teller (maybe not the most reliable news source) hit on this during thier first or second season of Bullshit!

Another lil bit of hypocrisy.... The VP of PETA is a Type 1 diabetic who uses Insulin (created from testing done on dogs) to control her blood/sugar levels... Even though PETA has a firm stance that animal testing does no good, and that companies/products that involve it should be boycotted, but she doesnt consider herself a hypocrite because "I need my life to protect the animals"

You can't write bullshit that thick

Yup. Sometimes putting them down is only the option but when you protest outside of other shelters (and the homes of the shelter employees) when they have MUCH better adoption and rescue rates than you....

I give my money to the SPCA. So far, I don't see PETA doing anything so special that other groups aren't doing/could do with better funding that justifies the outright lying and hypocrisy.

Not going to get into a debate on PETA, anyone that knows me, knows that I'm nearly a carnivore anyway, so it wouldn't do any good.

I am, however, going to compliment you, AquaticSub, on your signiature line.  It's wonderful, simple and straight to the point. :)

Here in England we have deer estates owned by the Leauge Against Cruel Sports. They're undoubtedly the worst managed estates in the country, full of mangy, diseased animals that go mad and die long, protracted deaths. The game keepers have been seen finding deer made lame by disease or fighting (due to overcrowding) and stabbing them to death.

On the private estates where hunting is allowed the deer are fit and healthy and beautiful and enjoy their lives.

Gee the PETA run 'horse rescue center' near here was shut down for criminal neglect of the animals.

Now, the SPCA center for the rehabilitation of horses has a 90% success rate and a 98% adoption rate.  They also supply horses for two group homes, the local boys ranch, and have a rancher in the panhandle that will take breeding stock and let em run with one of the few remaining herds of mustangs in Texas.

I even managed to help them get the meanest bitch of a mare who would make any evil mother in law look like cinderella adopted.    We tried a last resort shot, and brought in a family with a blind child.  The damn mare suddenly turned into the equine version of Mary Poppins!

I just don't deal with fanatics period.  PETA is bad to say the least.  I do commend the SPCA and those type of organizations.  I used to help with the no kill rescues in town till my mother got burned out.  I remember working right with the shelters trying to find homes for the animals.  Most of the time if they felt the animal could find a home but its date was up with them they would call any number of no kill shelters to help them find a home for the animal.  That's better progress than PETA ever contributed to our fury friends.

I hear ya.  My sister is fostering dogs from the local shelter here.  Another friend of mine is involved in breed rescue.

It's the hypocrisy that bugs me so much.

PETA has a long and ugly history. I've always thought that it's members and supporters should be skinned alive and turned into coats.

Yes yes yes.
Hell yes.
I wholeheartedly agree, their tactics suck and their hypocrisy is never ending.

I've always thought of them as rabid. Now we all know what happens to rabid animals...

This is an old and exposed trick by a corporate lobby group Center for Consumer Freedom  , who has no interest in the welfare of animals.Quite the opposite,really.They would like the to see the most inhumane treatment(that also being the most cost effective)of animals,possible.

Clean and healthy environments for farm animals?Mind your own business!We don`t want "government regulations" or the heavy hand of government telling us what to do(ie. safety and health rules).

They ran that ad right after the Michael Vick scandal,trying to glom some of the attention.

But who is Center for Consumer Freedom(the one`s behind PETAKILLSANIMALS.COM)?

They just don`t lie and deceive about PETA.They run ad campaigns against charities and anti-smoking groups,against organic farmers,against anyone who cuts into the corporate financial interests of the folks who fund the Center for Consumer Freedom.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwQNQOseu4k

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Though PETA is admittedly extreme group and little off the wall,the  Center for Consumer Freedom is no angle and by far .They aren`t nice guys trying to warn you about a great problem.They`re corporate hatchet-men, seeking to exploit people`s real and sincere concern for animals.Beware of the people behind this ad.
They are defending their clients(starting w/ Phillip Morris Tobacco,the food industry,chemical farming industry,etc.,etc.) with the most underhanded and deceptive ways possible.
PETAKILLSANIMALS.COM is not a animal rights/welfare group.They are solely an anti-PETA effort,cloaking themselves under a banner of concern for animals.
They are a very sophisticated and savvy PR firm,that uses half-truth coupled w/ total lies,pretending to be a consumer advocate.They don`t care if it`s PETA,or the guy who grows potatoes using organic fertilizers.
I've heard some very nasty shit about PETA, including animals thrown out of the van after pickup never to even make it to the shelter, which was no doubt full. Read it a couple years ago, but I dunno if I could ever find a link to anything solid on it.
But I have my own personal solution to this, I love animals, therefore I do not keep them. Period. They belong outside, that's why they have fur. I prefer to leave them there.
But once you decide to keep an animal KEEP IT DAMMIT ! Faithfully discharge the responsibilities you have willingly accepted.
Those with activist tendencies on this matter should have a look at sbfy's thread up there about "What should happen to...".
Owner, thank you for saying who is behind the petakillsanimals.com site.  I wondered if there was propaganda behind it (isn't there always?) , or if their information was incorrect.
Since some of the files they link to on their site have Ingrid Newkirk's signature on them, I'd have to say I'm glad they put it out there, as they have brought to light a serious hypocrisy, whatever their motive.  I surfed through their site and didn't see anything about wanting to see the most inhumane treatment of animals, unless I missed it.  I'm interested in that - can you point out that evidence?  Thanks!
Yup. Sometimes putting them down is only the option
I'm sorry but I disagree. I work at a cat shelter, and the only cats put to sleep are those who are in fact dying. If a massive organization like Peta, has registered charities they could distribute animals to then it would solve the problem. The main problem we have and the US is that people don't neuter their pets. Are people thick? Of course a cat or dog that goes outside (or gets out) is going to re-produce if not prevented. And this causes over-crowding. It's the same with the RSPCA here, they put down animals, sometimes after a week if they can't find a home. It's disgusting. Every animal deserves a life, if it's well.
What if Peta had a mass forum? All they would need to do is hire someone to list the animals and their description, then to ensure adoption goes through, they could ask for a donation on the website and do what we do. Which is ASK for a donation charge of £30 per cat, this includes us worming, de-fleaing and neutering the cat. Plus clipping their nails and other costs, like food. People can have whatever opinion, I just think there are better ones.
I'm sorry but I disagree.
Sometimes animals have been abused and so ill that keeping them alive is no kindness. It becomes a quality of life issue.
However, money is also a factor with shelters. Which is why I dearly wish PETA would be stripped of it's donors and the money given to local shelters and the SPCA. But if you have the spare cash laying around to pay for every AIDs infected pet monkey, make homes for dogs with severe food aggression - which makes the shelter legally liable for anyone who is bitten if they adopt them out, and other victims of human abuse and neglect, I'll personally research shelters for you to donate the money to.
If you think that is bad look at how they intimidate scare children even by providing their brand of educational materials in the classroom http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,156398,00.html
their milk suckers campaign http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1525042.stm
or suggesting they should fear their daddies because they fish
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,176739,00.html
or that mommy is a killer
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,176739,00.html
They  run campaigns  comparing chickens to holocaust victims, which is a total insult to those human victims and no where near the same
they paid $70,000 to and ALF member to burn down a michigan state research lab
they have even bombed labs that do not do animal research simply because they may have come connection that does
Dig around online to see how much the director of the human society earns  or the directors of PETA, paid for by donations sent by those who believe they are trying to help animals
Most adoption groups are  run strictly by volunteers on a non profit basis  and their euthansia rates are near 0% and they typically put a lot more health care costs into each animal adopted out nobody profits from  donations received . often they pull money out of their own pockets pay for the needs of the animals they are taking care of....at least that was the case with the adoption group I volunteered with
Here is list of articles of some of the unethical things they have done
http://www.rickross.com/groups/animal.html
as you can tell i have no use for them and I have butted heads with a director of one group in Michigan   on a few occasions when I was doing animal rescue
